October 5, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - It didn't take long for recently-returned New Jersey Devils prospect Ty Smith to make his presence felt in his return to Spokane Friday night as he posted 3 PTS (2G, 1A), including a goal at 2:14 in the first, to propel the Chiefs to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds.
Spokane's Jake McGrew pushed the Chiefs lead to 2-0 at 7:37 and Luke Toporowski scored just 17-seconds later to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead before Seattle countered with a goal at 11:05 to cut the lead to two entering the first intermission.
Smith struck for his second goal of the night at 3:45 of the middle frame to extend the Chiefs' lead to three. McGrew, a San Jose Sharks prospect, made it 5-1 Spokane at 11:46 with his second of the night. The goal moved McGrew into a tie for first in the Western Hockey League in goals at five.
Rookie goaltender Campbell Arnold impressed in his second start of the season, stopping 30-of-31 between the pipes for the Chiefs en route to his first career WHL victory. Seattle's Blake Lyda was 27-for-32 as the Thunderbirds struggled to fend off the Spokane power play as the Chiefs finished 2-for-4. Seattle was held 0-for-5 on their power play chances.
Post Fall, Idaho native Bear Hughes also made his season debut for the Chiefs Friday night, recording an assist in his return from a lower body injury.
