Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - A big win for the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night at Westoba Place.
Jiri Patera turned aside 40 shots and Luka Burzan scored a goal and set up another as the Wheat Kings blanked the defending Western Conference Champion Vancouver Giants 3-0.
With the win - their first on home ice this season - the Wheat Kings improved to 2-3-0 on the season and will host the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday night.
A Vegas Golden Knights draft choice, Patera was excellent in this one, making a number of key saves at critical times in the game. He made fifteen saves in the first period, thirteen more in the second and 12 in the third to record his first shutout of the season and second in his WHL career.
By doing so, he moved into a tie for fourteenth place on the club's all time list for career shutouts with the likes of Corbin Boes, Trevor Robins, Trevor Kidd, Jacob DeSerres and Blaine Peterson.
Brandon scored goals in each period, with Ben McCartney opening the scoring with one minute to play in the first.
Luka Burzan, on the powerplay, made it 2-0 in the second and defenceman Braden Schneider notched an insurance powerplay marker at the midway point of the third. The Wheat Kings finished the game 2 for 9 with the man advantage while successfully killing off all seven Vancouver powerplays.
Friday night's game marked the return of center Ridly Greig to the lineup and the 17-year old Lethbridge product notched a pair of assists.
Greig had missed the past three games due to a suspension for a hit on Winnipeg defenceman Chase Hartje during the opening minute of play in last month's Home Opener.
The game also marked the return of former scoring star Terry Yake to Brandon. Yake, who will be one of five former Wheat Kings to be inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame on Saturday night in Winnipeg, was recognized during a second period video on the center ice scoreclock.
Following Saturday's game with Edmonton, the Wheat Kings will travel to Saskatoon to meet the Blades on Sunday night.
Saturday night is Willie's Birthday, with special priced kids' tickets, concession specials and lots of fun on the concourse for the entire family, courtesy of Jumparoo.
As well, those fans purchasing $5 children's tickets at the box office will receive a McDonalds' Happy meal voucher.
Tickets go back on sale at the Keystone box office at 10am Saturday, but fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
