Black's Late Homer Gives Barons 5-4 Win over Pensacola

August 27, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

Dan Black's solo home run in the 7th inning broke a 4-4 tie, propelling the Barons to a 5-4 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in front of 5,038 fans at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Black's homer, his second in two days, was his team-leading 17th of the season and came with two outs in the seventh inning against reliever Chris Manno (4-4, 3.70).

The long ball was the second on the night for the Barons, following another solo blast by Cody Puckett in the first inning. It was Puckett's fourth home run against his former team this season.

A pair of Barons' catchers would give the Barons a three-run lead midway through the game on a Chris McMurray RBI double in the fourth and a two-run double by Mike Blanke in the fifth.

Starter Chris Bassitt would grind through 5.0 gritty innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out four, but he ran into trouble in the sixth, putting the first two runners aboard before giving way to reliever Henry Mabee (1-0, 1.08). The Blue Wahoos would score three runs in the inning to tie the game at 4-4 thanks to RBI hits by Ray Chang and Devin Lohman.

However, Black would give Mabee his first win since June 6th, 2012 with his home run in the next inning. Nestor Molina and Cody Winiarski would combine to allow just two hits over 3.0 scoreless innings to end the game with Winiarski picking up his 3rd save since joining the Barons two weeks ago.

With the win, the Barons improved to 75-60 and 31-34 in the second half while the Blue Wahoos fell to 58-75 and 33-31 in the second half.

The Barons will enjoy their final off day of the regular season on Wednesday before returning to Regions Field for the final homestand of the year against the Montgomery Biscuits. First pitch of game one on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
