Suns Fall 8-6 in Series Finale in Montgomery
August 27, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Montgomery Biscuits (31-34, 68-67) dealt the Jacksonville Suns (36-28, 70-61) a tough loss in the finale of a five-game series on Tuesday, rallying from a late deficit to win 8-6.
The Suns held a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but relievers Scott McGough (4-1) and Michael Brady could not prevent Montgomery from scoring four times to re-take the lead for good.
It looked at first as though the night would be remembered for the heroics of Suns second baseman Derek Dietrich. Dietrich finished 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a pair of runs scored, including a two-run home run in the fourth that put Jacksonville ahead 2-1.
The Suns and Biscuits entered the sixth inning tied 2-2, but Dietrich again came through, doubling in Brent Keys to put Jacksonville back on top, 3-2. Montgomery struck back with the tying run in the bottom half, and then forged ahead 4-3 in the seventh.
Jacksonville put together its own go-ahead rally in the eighth, placing runners on first and second for Zack Cox. The Suns' designated hitter lined a base hit to tie the game, and Danny Black followed with a two-run single that gave Jacksonville a 6-4 advantage.
The Biscuits' eighth inning rally would prove to be the deciding one, however. Delmon Young's RBI single pulled Montgomery to within a run, and Curt Casali's bases-loaded single put them ahead.
The Biscuits would add an insurance run before Juan Sandoval (5-3) retired the side in order in the ninth to finish off a wild Montgomery victory.
Suns starter Justin Nicolino lasted five and a third innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits before departing in the sixth. The left-hander struck out two and walked two before giving way to Pete Andrelczyk.
The Suns will have a day off on Wednesday before beginning a critical five-game series against the Mississippi Braves on Thursday at Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Left-hander Andrew Heaney (4-1, 2.60) will make the start for Jacksonville in the opener, opposed by Braves right-hander Michael Lee (9-8, 3.64). First pitch on Thursday is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
Suns fans can listen to Thursday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET with the UF Health Suns Pre-Game Show.
