Black Hawks Announce 2011-2012 USHL Schedule

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks' 2011-2012 regular season will begin with a road game against the Omaha Lancers on September 30th, the United States Hockey League announced Tuesday.

The Hawks will skate in their first home game at Young Arena against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday October 15th after four matchups on hostile ice. This will be the third consecutive season that Waterloo opens the home portion of the calendar against Cedar Rapids.

"The schedule this year was a collaborative effort of league personnel and members of each team," said Black Hawks President Doug Miller. "Together we faced the challenges of traveling by bus from cities as far apart as Fargo or Kearney to Youngstown and Ann Arbor. We also had to battle building availability and other outside factors such as the Super Bowl being held in Indianapolis this season. Even with those obstacles, we came up with a very, very good schedule that fans should be excited about."

The unbalanced schedule will pit Waterloo against their nearby opponents from Cedar Rapids and the Dubuque Fighting Saints eight times each. However, the Black Hawks will be transplanted to the league's Western Conference, providing an opportunity to rekindle rivalries with the Des Moines Buccaneers, Sioux City Musketeers, and Omaha Lancers. The Hawks and Buccaneers have been playing since 1980, while the Sioux City series dates back to 1972 during both clubs' days as semi-pro, "senior" franchises. Waterloo and Omaha met during the 2008 Clark Cup championship series.

Each of the 16 member clubs within the USHL will once again play 60 games, split evenly between home ice and road trips. All but one game at Young Arena - the Hawks' traditional Thanksgiving matchup versus the RoughRiders - will be on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Other highlights include home games on Veteran's Day versus the Chicago Steel, New Years' Eve with Cedar Rapids, and St. Patrick's Day against Dubuque.
