The Des Moines Buccaneers, in conjunction with the United States Hockey League, have announced their official regular season schedule for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The 60-game campaign will begin Saturday, October 1 at home against Fargo and conclude Saturday April 14 at Indiana.
In between, fans can expect to see an increase in the number of games against traditional rivals such as Omaha, Sioux City and Lincoln along with a high volume of weekend dates.
"It is going to be a challenge as it is for every team in this league, but our fans will enjoy seeing our traditional rivals more often with this schedule," said Bucs' Head Coach and General Manager Regg Simon.
The Buccaneers will once again be placed in the eight team Western Conference but unlike last season when all but 16 of their games were against the Eastern Conference, this season Des Moines will mostly play in their own division.
"This schedule truly puts us back in the Western division," added Simon.
This improved schedule means the Buccaneers will play Omaha six times as one of junior hockey's fiercest rivalries is renewed.
One of those six meetings will also coincide with the long-awaited return of a once annual tradition, as the Bucs will play Omaha on Thanksgiving Eve Wednesday November 23rd at Buccaneer Arena.
Des Moines' schedule is one of convenience for fans as all but two of the home games will be played on a weekend. The breakdown includes 11 Friday games, 16 Saturdays and one game the Sunday before President's Day in February.
"It's a great schedule for our fans as the USHL did a fantastic job limiting weekday games which are a hassle for many of our fans to attend," commented Buccaneers' Business Development Manager Brant Parriott.
The coaching staff is in the process of finalizing a pre-season slate that will be announced at a later time. In addition, the USHL will also announce the schedule for the 2011 Fall Classic in Sioux City later this summer.
The Des Moines Buccaneers will be playing their 32nd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League beginning in the fall of 2011. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
