West Virginia Black Bears News Release
Granville, W. Va. - Kicking off a three-game series on the road, the West Virginia Black Bears came back to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 7-5.
This road trip marks the first time the Black Bears have played a non-Pinckney Division opponent this season, as the Renegades are part of the McNamara Division.
Hudson Valley jumped out to an early lead on a three-run homer in the first inning. After a solo shot in the fifth inning, the Renegades were sitting with a 4-0 lead.
That's when the West Virginia offense came out of hibernation. CF Travis Swaggerty started things off in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run of his own to cut the deficit to 4-1.
P Miguel Hernandez came in for the sixth and seventh innings and had a great outing for the Black Bears. The tall righty got through the pair of innings without surrendering a hit, picking up a strikeout to keep the visiting team in striking distance.
Then in the top of the eighth, West Virginia roared back to take the lead. 2B Robbie Glendinning opened the frame with an RBI double, followed by a two-run single from 1B Luke Mangieri to tie the score at 4-4.
With Mangieri on first, RF Brett Kinneman crushed a home run to right field to give the West Virginia its first lead. Kinneman's homer was the first of his professional career, and his second hit of the night.
The Renegades did not go away quietly, as an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth cut the Black Bears' lead to 6-5.
Looking for insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning, DH Edison Lanitgua came through for West Virginia. Lantigua crushed a solo home run, one of his three hits on the day, to give the Black Bears a 7-5 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, P Cam Alldred came through for West Virginia. The lefty shut down Hudson Valley on a groundout and two strikeouts to pick up the save and give the Black Bears a victory in game one.
GAME TWO
The Hudson Valley Renegades overpowered the Black Bears in game two, handing West Virginia an 8-0 loss.
The Black Bears were held to 3 hits in the ballgame, as the Renegades tied the series at one game apiece.
After an RBI single in the first inning, Hudson Valley picked up another run on a triple bottom of the third to give the home team a two-run lead. Picking up four runs over the next two innings, the Renegades held a 6-0 lead with four innings left to play.
P John Pomeroy was a bright spot for West Virginia on the night. In the sixth inning, the righty threw a scoreless frame, picking up a strikeout in the process to continue his return to baseball after missing a year due to Tommy John surgery.
Hudson Valley grabbed two more runs in the seventh to build an 8-0 lead, as West Virginia headed to the third game looking to grab a series win on the road.
GAME 3
In a low scoring pitcher's duel, the Hudson Valley Renegades muscled out a 2-0 win over the West Virginia Black Bears.
Both pitching staffs were firing on cylinders on Friday night, as both teams combined for a total of only seven hits.
P Alex Manasa had a nice start for the Black Bears on the mound. The righty dominated through six innings of three-hit baseball, allowing only one run to go with two strikeouts and three walks.
His lone earned run came in the fourth inning, as the Renegades got on the board with a sac-fly to take a 1-0 lead.
Despite a great outing from Manasa, the West Virginia bats were quiet once again. The team picked up only two hits, coming from DH Jhoan Herrera and 3B Nick Valaika respectively.
Hudson Valley grabbed another run on an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to take a two-run lead.
P Conner Loeprich did what he could in the eighth inning to keep the Black Bears in the game. The righty reliever tossed a scoreless frame of work, picking up a strikeout and lowering his ERA to 0.96 on the season.
Unable to put anything together in the top of the ninth, West Virginia left Wappingers Falls, New York with a series loss to the top team in the McNamara Division.
The Black Bears continue the six-game road trip with a series against the Staten Island Yankees beginning tomorrow. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
