Batavia Muckdogs News Release
NORWICH, CT - In a game that was a phenomenal pitcher's duel all night long, it was a game that came down to who could execute bunts. The rubber match against the Connecticut Tigers went the way of the Tigers, as they picked up the 2-1 victory in eleven innings.
There were no runs in the game until the tenth inning. Each team had pitched a full nine innings of shutout baseball. Alberto Guerrero had another excellent start. He threw five innings of shutout ball, while only giving up three hits. Dylan Cyphert followed suit with two innings of shutout relief. Four of the six outs that he recorded were by strikeout. Evan Estes was next in line, and he mirrored Cyphert's line with four strikeouts in two innings of relief.
Zach Wolf was the unfortunate lone wolf to surrender runs in the game, both of which were unearned. The first run would be scored due to a wild pitch from Wolf in the tenth, the second of the two was the one that won the game.
Batavia's first extra-inning contest of the year started off with perfect execution. Luke Jarvis was the runner that started on second base in accordance with the new MiLB pace-of-play rules. Brayan Hernandez would move him over with a perfect sacrifice bunt. Gunnar Schubert then drove Jarvis in with an RBI single to left field, his first RBI as a Muckdog.
In the bottom of the tenth, the runner that started at second base was Dayton Dugas. Dugas advanced to second base on the Wolf wild pitch. Batavia's reliever would follow up with a strikeout that essentially negated the wild pitch, as if the Tigers had bunted anyway. The next play was a fielder's choice that, had it been turned as a double play, it would've ended the game. Reynolds was able to get the first out at second base, but the turn would not be in time to get Reece Hampton out. It did, however, allow the runner from third to score to tie the game.
In the top of the eleventh, Guaimaro bunted the ball right back to the pitcher that saw Donadio, who started on second, thrown out at third. Batavia then could not get any runs across the plate in the top of the eleventh.
In the bottom of the frame, Connecticut just needed one run to score to win the game. Sam McMillan gets the bunt down to start the inning, but a throwing error from Denis Karas would allow the starting runner to score to win the game.
The Muckdogs return back to Dwyer Stadium on Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox). All Little Leaguers get in free all weekend by wearing their jersey.
