West Virginia Black Bears News Release
Granville, W. VA. - On Teacher's Appreciation Night at Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears schooled the Batavia Muckdogs by a score of 6-0.
The win helped the Black Bears snap a four-game losing streak, holding Batavia scoreless for the first time since July 30.
The start of Monday night's matchup featured a pitcher's duel between West Virginia P Alex Manasa and Batavia P Humberto Mejia. The starters combined to allow only one hit through the first four innings, holding the game scoreless in the early going.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Black Bears finally got to Mejia. With a runner on first, 1B Luke Mangieri tripled down the right field line for the game's first run. C Grant Koch then drove Mangieri home on an RBI single, giving the home team a 2-0 lead.
Holding a two-run cushion, Manasa continued to stifle the Muckdogs' lineup. The righty shut out the visitors in his six innings of work, surrendering only two hits and one walk while picking up a season-high seven strikeouts.
West Virginia continued the charge in the bottom of the sixth inning with three more runs. RF Brett Kinneman continued his RBI hot-streak, driving in two runs on a double to right field to extend the Black Bears' lead. DH Connor Kaiser also came through with a sac-fly to bring another run home, putting the score at 5-0.
Kinneman now has four RBI's during this home stand, increasing his team-high total to 28 on the season. He also leads West Virginia with 11 doubles in his first year in the Pirates' organization.
P Will Gardner shut down the visitors in the seventh inning, picking up two strikeouts without giving up a hit.
After a scoreless top of the eighth, the Black Bears tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on second, Kaiser picked up his second RBI of the day on a looping single to right field, building a 6-0 lead heading into the final frame.
To complete the shutout, West Virginia turned to P Logan Stoelke. Already holding off Batavia in the eighth inning, the righty continued his work in the ninth to get the final three outs and even the series at one game apiece.
The rubber match between the Black Bears and the Muckdogs takes place tomorrow night at Monongalia County Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
