Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Gresuan Silverio drove in two runs on a first-inning double as the Connecticut Tigers (23-23) raced out to lead but faded down the stretch thanks to a pair of three-run homers by the Tri-City ValleyCats (27-22) in a 7-4 loss to the Stedler Division leaders on Monday night at Dodd Stadium.
With the Tigers leading by one run in the sixth inning, Darwin Alvarado doubled the advantage on an RBI single to center that made it 3-1 Connecticut. Tigers starter Jose Vasquez left in line for the win after six innings, four hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. The 22-year-old righty allowed one unearned run in the third on a throwing error.
Tri-City took its first lead in the seventh as the first two batters reached base against Tigers reliever Victor Mueses (Loss, 0-3) and Emmanuel Valdez took him deep for a three-run homer that put the ValleyCats ahead, 4-3.
In the ninth, Dylan Stock allowed a second three-run homer by the ValleyCats as Carlos Machado ran the Tri-City lead to 7-3. Connecticut gave up multiple home runs in a game for the first time since July 17 at Hudson Valley.
Alexis Garcia led the Tigers with three base hits and a run while Silverio went 2-for-4 with a team-best two runs batted in. Jordan Verdon added an RBI double in the ninth but Connecticut finished the game 4-for-17 at the plate with runners in scoring position and dropped to last place in the Stedler Division, 2 1/2 games behind the first-place ValleyCats.
On Tuesday, the Tigers meet the ValleyCats in the rubber match of their three-game series with Connecticut righty Gio Arriera (2-2, 3.80) scheduled to throw first pitch at 7:05 p.m. on Dollar Hot Dog Tuesday presented by Kayem. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez at 6:50 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com.
