Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (32-31) went into the bottom of the 9th inning with a one-run lead over the Kansas City T-Bones (29-34), but committed two errors to allow two runs and lose 5-4.
Taylor Black allowed a double to Tyson Gillies to start off the last half inning. Then, Brett Wiley dropped a bunt down in front of RailCats catcher Jaime Del Valle who threw the ball into right field. Gillies came around to score on the errant throw and Wiley advanced towards second. Right fielder Chase Harris struggled to field the wild throw and then fired the ball into the stands to send Wiley home. In the end, the T-Bones walked off on a sacrifice bunt followed by two errors.
Black was charged with the loss after pitching one inning and giving up two unearned runs on two hits and three walks. Mark Haynes earned the win for KC in a relief effort where he went one inning and gave up two earned runs on two hits.
Carlos Pinales made his American Association debut tonight as the starting pitcher for the RailCats. He went five innings and gave up two runs on six hits. The right-hander struck out five batters and didn't issue a walk.
The T-Bones got to Pinales early, though. Gillies led off with a base hit and scored on a two-out knock by Jake Blackwood.
Kansas City scored again in the 2nd inning. This time Dalton Wheat singled and stole second base. Then he moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Sergio Leon single.
There was not more scoring until the 6th inning when KC strung two more hits together. Anthony Gallas doubled to left field and scored on Vladimir Frias' single to center.
The RailCats started the comeback in the 8th inning. Cameron Newell walked, Anthony Cheky singled and Frank Martinez sent Newell home on a fielder's choice. T-Bones' catcher Tyler Moore couldn't handle a called third strike pitch against Alex Crosby and Cheky scampered home for the second run of the inning.
The RailCats entered the top of the 9th down 3-2 and Jarred Mederos started the frame with a double. After a Cheky sacrifice, Harris tied the game on a fielder's choice. Next, Martinez delivered a clutch two-out single that scored Newell to give the Cats their first lead at 4-3.
Then the wheels came off and the RailCats lost on a walk-off for the fourth time in 2016.
Cheky and Harris had multi-hit days for the RailCats and Martinez recorded multiple RBIs. The RailCats fell to 1-4 when committing three errors in a game. The Lincoln Saltdogs won in Wichita, meaning the RailCats are 5.5 games back of first place in the Central Division.
The RailCats look to erase Monday's heartbreaking loss tomorrow night in KC. First pitch is at 7:05 PM and coverage begins at 6:40 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
