WINGNUTS HAMMER JOPLIN

The Wichita Wingnuts avoided a sweep at the hands of the Joplin Blasters Sunday afternoon by claiming a 10-2 victory at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Joplin jumped out to a lead two batters in on a solo homer by Geraldo Valentin, but Wichita answered with a solo shot of their own in the home half by Zack Cox. The Wingnuts then grabbed the lead with a four-run third. T.J. Mittelstaedt put the home team in front with an RBI double, Matt Chavez blasted a two-run homer, and Brennen Salgado capped the frame with a run-scoring single. The lead then stretched to five in the fifth when Richard Prigatano brought home a run with a ground ball. The Blasters got a run back in the next half inning, but only managed one base runner over the final three innings, and saw their final nine hitters retired by the Wingnuts bullpen. Wichita tacked on four to put the game out of reach in the seventh and eighth innings. An error allowed a run to score in the seventh, and Cox picked up an RBI single and Chavez added a two-run double later in that frame to put a cap on his four-hit, four-RBI day.

THE FOUR-HIT CLUB

After hitting for the cycle in Saturday's loss to Joplin, T.J. Mittelstaedt posted four hits for the second straight day Sunday afternoon, going 4-for-5 with three singles, a double, and three runs scored. Joining Mittelstaedt with four hits yesterday was Matt Chavez, who went 4-for-4 with a home run, a pair of doubles, a single, and four runs batted in. For Mittelstaedt it was his third four-hit performance of the year, for Chavez his second. It was also the second four-RBI outing of the year for Chavez who now has driven in 30 in 30 games this year.

NEXT UP: LINCOLN

The Wingnuts homestand continues tonight as they open up a three-game series against the Central Division-leading Lincoln Saltdogs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Lincoln was in Wichita for Opening Weekend 2016 and played the part of spoilers, taking three out of the four meetings. This series marks a string of 17 straight for the Wingnuts against teams with a record of .500 or better, with two series against Lincoln and one each with Laredo, Fargo and Winnipeg coming up.
