Bisons' Smith Named Pitcher of the Week

The International League today announced that Bisons starter Sean Smith is the IL's pitcher of the week for May 14-20.

Smith, 23, won both his starts for the Bisons this week (11.1IP, 9H, R, ER, 3BB, 11K). On Tuesday, he worked six shutout innings as the Herd defeated Ottawa, 7-6, from Lynx Stadium (3H, 4K). Sunday, he struck out a season-high seven in an 8-1 home win over Indianapolis (5.1IP, 6H).

The two strong outings lowered Smith's ERA to 1.77 on the season, just one-hundredth of a point behind Rochester's Kevin Slowey (1.76) for the International League lead. Smith is also tied for the team lead in wins (4) and second in strikeouts (32).

Smith is first the Bisons pitcher to receive the league's weekly honor since Francisco Cruceta took home the award, July 12-18, 2004. Since then, the Herd has had seven different hitters win IL Batter of the Week awards, including outfielder Jason Dubois and infielder Andy Marte in 2006.
