IL1 International League

IL names players of the week

May 21, 2007 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Norfolk outfielder Tike Redman and Buffalo pitcher Sean Smith have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from May 14-20. Each is the first member of their respective club to win an IL weekly award in 2007.

TIKE REDMAN has exploded on to the International League scene in his first week of action during the 2007 season. Redman was signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, May 15, and immediately assigned to Norfolk. Redman has appeared in eight full games since joining the Tides, hitting safely in every one. (He was also 0-2 in the completion of a suspended game played Saturday). Overall for the week, Redman hit .481 (13-27) with a pair of stolen bases and 12 runs scored. He led the International League in both hits and runs during the timeframe, and posted the 2nd highest batting average. His three triples this week also led the IL, and tied Redman with Mike Cervenak and Brandon Fahey for the most three-baggers on the Tides for the entire season. Redman enjoyed four multiple-hit games this week, including an amazing 3-3 effort with four runs scored against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday night.

30-year-old Tike Redman is in his 12th season as a professional player. He was a member of the Pittsburgh organization for the first ten years, playing 392 games with the Pirates between 2000 and 2005. Last year Redman hit .253 in 79 games with Toledo before being released in late July. He finished the season at Double-A Corpus Christi as a member of the Houston organization. Redman began the 2007 season with the York Revolution of the Independent Atlantic League, hitting .411 in seven games before being signed by the Orioles. Redman is a native of Tuscaloosa, AL.

Buffalo right hander SEAN SMITH was the odd man out of the Bisons' starting rotation at the beginning of the season, the victim of a staff stocked full of talent. After a few appearances out of the bullpen, Smith has found his way back into the rotation, and he's making the most of his opportunity. Smith won both of his starts this week, improving his record to 4-1 and lowering his ERA to 1.77, just a notch behind League leader Kevin Slowey of Rochester (1.76). Smith took the hill Tuesday, May 15 at Ottawa for his fourth start of the season. He shutout the Lynx for 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out four. His teammates built a 7-0 lead that withstood a late Ottawa rally against the Bisons' bullpen, and the Herd won 7-6. Yesterday afternoon, Smith made his second start of the week, this time back home against IL West leading Indianapolis. The Indians managed just one run off of Smith through 5.1 innings. Smith struck out seven batters, leading his club to a comfortable 8-1 triumph. It was his fourth victory of the season, tying him with Adam Miller for the team lead.

23-year-old Sean Smith is in his 6th professional season, all within the Indians organization. It is his first stint in Triple-A after going 10-5 with a 3.88 ERA in his 24-start Double-A career, all coming in 2006 with Akron. 106 of his 117 career appearances have been as a starter. Overall Smith has posted a 39-24 record as a Minor League pitcher. Smith is a native of Concord, CA.
