
Bisons Laffey Gets First Big League Call

The Cleveland Indians today announced that LHP Aaron Laffey has been promoted to make his Major League debut today against the Minnesota Twins. To make room on their roster, long-time Bisons LHP Jason Stanford was designated for assignment.
With the open roster spot, the Bisons activated RHP Scott Elarton, who was signed by the Indians on Friday.
Laffey has spent much of the 2007 season with the Bisons, going 7-0 with a 3.28ERA in 14 games (13GS, 82.1IP, 77H, 30ER, 19BB, 62K). After starting his Triple-A career 0-3, he became the first pitcher in the Bisons' Modern Era to win six games in a month when he went 6-0 with a 0.87ERA in six games. Since June 2, Laffey is 7-0 with a 1.92ERA in 11 games (65.2IP, 51H, 14ER, 14BB, 56K). At Buffalo, he limited batters to a .245 (77-314) average against, including a mark of .242 (58-240) against righties.
Laffey started the year at Double-A Akron where he went 4-1 with a 2.31ERA in six starts (35.0IP, 29H, 9ER) before being promoted on May 17 to Buffalo. His 11 overall wins lead all Indians minor league players while his ERA of 2.99 (117.1IP, 39ER) ranks 2nd.
According to Baseball Reference, Laffey (22 years, 111 days) will be the youngest Indians starter to debut since CC Sabathia (20 years, 261 days on April 8, 2001).
Stanford went 1-1 with a 4.78ERA in eight games for the Indians (26.1IP, 32H, 14ER) since being promoted from the Bisons on June 14. He was 4-1 with a 3.41ERA in 12 games with Buffalo to begin the year. The only person to play seven consecutive seasons in the Bisons Modern Era, Stanford was 24-12 with a 3.38ERA in 66 career games with the team. His 276 Bisons strikeouts rank 3rd most in the Modern Era (most for a lefty).
Elarton, 31, has spent the last season and a half with the Kansas City Royals. Elarton went 2-4 with a 10.46ERA in nine starts for the Royals this year (37.0IP, 53H, 43ER, 21BB, 13K). He also spent time on the DL with shoulder and ankle injuries. Elarton pitched in the Indians organization in 2004 and 2005. He was signed as a free agent by the Tribe on May 25, 2004 and sent to the Bisons. He then made three starts with the Herd before being promoted to the Indians. He went 1-1 with a 3.15ERA in those three games with Buffalo (20.0IP, 19H, 7R, 7ER, 5BB, 10K).
