Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (39-35) and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (43-30) recorded nine of their 15 combined runs in the first two innings, but Montgomery had just enough firepower to win the slugfest by a score of 8-7 on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Biscuits came out swinging in the first inning against Luis Palacios with multiple two-run home runs from Junior Caminero and Logan Driscoll. The 464 ft. moonshot was the fifth for Caminero and the 398 ft. blast was the ninth for Driscoll.
Pensacola struck back against Sean Hunley and the Biscuits with a five-run second inning that was spearheaded by a two-run homer from Norel Gonzalez to make the score 4-2. Jose Devers followed with an RBI-single to make it a one-run ballgame, and Troy Johnston recorded the fourth two-run shot of the day to put the Blue Wahoos ahead, 5-4.
The action picked back up in the fifth inning when Will Banfield blasted a solo-shot off the scoreboard. One inning later, Cody Morissette crossed the plate despite Gonzalez hitting into a 6-4-3 double play as the Blue Wahoos extended their lead to three runs.
Mason Auer put the Biscuits back in the ballgame with a two-run shot to the railroad tracks behind left field, making the score 7-6. It was the sixth home run of the season for Auer and the sixth combined for both teams during the ballgame, closing in on the team record of seven.
Heriberto Hernandez tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI-double off the right field wall. The knock allowed Evan Edwards to bring in the go-ahead run with an RBI-single into center field, making the score 8-7 in favor of Montgomery.
Enmanuel Mejia took the mound in the top of the ninth and retired three of his first four batters to close the game and earn his third save of the season. Nelson Alvarez (4-1) earned the win while Eli Villabolos (0-1) recorded the loss.
With a hit today, Austin Shenton extended his on-base streak to 18 games, which is only four shy of tying the team-long that was also set by the third baseman. The Butter and Blue now have 88 home runs on the season after entering the day at third place in the Southern League with 85.
The Biscuits and the Blue Wahoos will close the series on Monday, July 3 with first pitch set for 6:05 PM. The game will include an Independence Day Celebration along with MAX Fireworks and features a pitching matchup of Victor Muñoz (6-4) for the Biscuits against Jonathan Bermudez (1-2) for Pensacola.
