Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (2-6) battled back from an early four-run deficit, but fell a run short in their comeback, falling for the second time in three games to the Birmingham Barons (5-3) on Friday night at Regions Field by a score of 5-4.
Montgomery got off to another great start in the first inning, however, when Mike Brosseau hit an RBI-double down the right field line off Birmingham starter Jordan Guerrero to make it 1-0 Biscuits. Brosseau would also notch his first three-hit game at the Double-A level. But a Seby Zavala sac fly off Biscuits starter J.D. Martin (0-2) knotted things up at one in the bottom of the first.
After both teams were held scoreless in the second, the Barons would get to Martin again in the third thanks to an RBI-single by Matt Rose. A few batters later, Keon Barnum stepped up, and the Barons first baseman did not miss, slugging a three-run opposite-field home run over the left field wall to put Birmingham ahead 5-1.
The Biscuits would rally back in the fourth though with RBIs from Nathan Lukes and Ryan Boldt to cut the deficit in half at 5-3. An inning later, the Biscuits would load the bases on three-straight singles off Guerrero before a Dalton Kelly sac fly cut the Barons lead to one.
But the Birmingham bullpen, led by Colton Turner (1-0), Jorge Rondon, and Ian Hamilton shut the Biscuits down the rest of the way en route to the one-run victory. The Biscuits did load the bases again in seventh, but Rondon struck out Jake Cronenworth to end the threat.
Matt Krook was a bright spot out of the Biscuits bullpen, firing four shutout innings in relief for Martin, and striking out six.
The Biscuits will try to rebound on Saturday when Benton Moss (0-1) takes the hill against Ian Clarkin (1-0) at 6:30 PM.
