Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (31-22) made it interesting late, but ultimately held on to a crucial 8-7 win over the Birmingham Barons (21-32) on Friday night at Regions Field.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first frame, Jesus Sanchez stepped up to the plate in the second and clobbered a grand slam off Barons starter Blake Battenfield (1-2). The grand slam was the Biscuits first since Mike Brosseau's on July 1, 2018 in game two of a doubleheader at Jacksonville, and also made Jesus Sanchez the new Southern League leader with 39 RBIs.
The Barons answered back with a Mitch Roman RBI-fielder's choice in the bottom of the second off opener Matt Krook, and a two-out, two-run single by Blake Rutherford off Kenny Rosenberg (4-1) made it a 4-3 game in the third.
The Biscuits would add another run in the fifth, however, on a line drive sac fly off the bat of David Rodriguez. A Miles Mastrobuoni two-run single in the sixth made it a 7-3 game before Dalton Kelly's RBI-double in the eighth made it 8-3.
The Barons would storm back in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer by Gavin Sheets, and made the Biscuits sweat with two more runs on a groundout and a wild pitch uncorked by Tyler Zombro in the ninth.
Zombro would finally strike out Ti'Quan Forbes to end the game and force a rubber match on Saturday, when Josh Fleming (4-3) takes on Kodi Medeiros (0-7) at 6:30 PM CT. The Biscuits victory coupled with the Jackson Generals' loss means that Montgomery is back in first place all alone atop the First Half North Division standings with 17 games to go before the All-Star break.
The Biscuits will be back at Riverwalk Stadium to open up a five-game series with the Tennessee Smokies on Sunday, June 2 when there will be a Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Jersey Giveaway. The series also includes Alabama Agriculture Night on Tuesday, June 4; A Trucker Hat Giveaway presented by U.S. Air Force on Wednesday, June 5; and 80's Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by Gipson's Tire Pros on Thursday, June 6.
