KODAK, Ten. - The Biscuits (1-3) put up a strong fight, but fell just short, 4-3, to the Tennessee Smokies (3-1) on Saturday night at Smokies Stadium.
Tobias Myers got the start for the Biscuits, and impressed early on, striking out lead-off hitter Christian Donahue and number three hitter Christopher Morel in the first inning. Myers would finish with four strikeouts over four scoreless innings.
Javier Assad started on the other side for Tennessee before Ryan Kellogg came on in the third. The game remained scoreless until the fifth when Michael Smith broke the deadlock with a sac fly to center. Miles Mastrobuoni then added to the Biscuits' lead with an RBI-double that made it 2-0.
Alex Valverde came on for Myers in the bottom of the fifth, and the Smokies quickly loaded the bases against the right-hander before scoring their first run on an error by the righty. Back-to-back RBI-singles from Andy Weber and Morel tied the game, and then put the Smokies in front, 3-2, at the end of five.
Jake Palomaki, who went 3-for-3 last night, then walked in a plucky at-bat to lead-off the seventh before Seaver Whalen doubled to the right-center field gap to tie the game at three. Moises Gomez appeared to have his second home run of the season when he crushed a pitch to right in the eighth, but Vance Vizcaino climbed the wall and robbed the Biscuits right fielder of the round-tripper.
Tyler Payne then came through with a clutch two-out RBI-single off Joel Peguero (0-1) that scored Miguel Amaya from second to hand the Smokies the 4-3 lead for good in the bottom of the eighth.
The Biscuits will try to leave Tennessee on a high note on Sunday afternoon when RHP Caleb Sampen makes his Double-A debut against LHP Luis Lugo (0-0) at 1:00 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for the first time since 2019 with a six-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Opening Night presented by Chick-fil-A with a MAX Fireworks Show on Tuesday, May 11.
