
Walks Prove Costly In 3-2 Loss To Blue Wahoos On Friday

PEARL, MS - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos won their fourth-straight game over the Mississippi Braves to open the 2021 season on Friday night at Trustmark Park, 3-2. The two teams combined for 18 walks in the 3 hours 17-minute contest.
Odalvi Javier made his Double-A debut for the M-Braves (0-4) on the mound and struggled with command, walking five, but striking out four over 3.0 innings.
The Blue Wahoos (4-0) touched the scoreboard first for the fourth-straight game when Victor Victor Mesa walked and came around to score on a Nick Fortes sacrifice fly.
The M-Braves took their first lead of the young season in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Greyson Jenista walked, Drew Lugbauer reached on an error and Wendell Rijo brought home Jenista with a single to left. After a walk to Justin Dean loaded the bases, Wahoos pitcher Brandon Leibrandt walked Shewmake with the bases loaded to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
M-Braves reliever Matt Hartman (L, 0-1) let the first three batters reached to start the top of the sixth inning and Mesa hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. The Wahoos added another run to take a 3-2 lead. Pensacola reliever Brian McKenna (W, 1-0) picked up the victory, tossing 3.0 shutout innings. Wahoos relievers combined for six shutout innings to keep the M-Braves off the scoreboard the rest of the night. Anthony Maldonado (S, 1) locked down the save in the ninth for the Wahoos.
Justin Dean and Braden Shewmake reached base safely two times each on walks and catcher Shea Langeilers doubled in the third inning for his first hit at the Double-A level. The M-Braves remain the only winless team in the Double-A South, while Pensacola is the only undefeated club.
In total, the M-Braves walked 12 batters, while Pensacola stranded 13 on base. The two teams combined for just six hits and went 1-for-23 with runners in scoring position.
Game five of the six-game opening homestand continues on Saturday night at Trustmark Park, with first pitch at 6:05 pm. RHP Victor Vodnik (0-0, --) starts for the M-Braves against RHP Jeff Lindgren (0-0, --)
