Biscuits battle back several times for 6-5 win

MONTGOMERY - The Montgomery Biscuits (4-9; 38-45) battled from behind the Mississippi Braves (9-4; 39-44) three times at Riverwalk Stadium Monday night, eventually taking a 6-5 lead and hanging on for dear life in a series-opening win.

Mississippi first baseman Kala Ka'aihue and Montgomery center fielder Erold Andrus traded solo home runs in the second inning, and Montgomery wasted a golden opportunity against Mississippi starter Tommy Hanson, loading the bases with no outs and failing to score. Montgomery let Hanson off the hook several times, forcing him from the game after 80 pitches in three innings but leaving seven men on the bases against him.

Ka'aihue struck again against Montgomery starter James Houser in the fourth inning, blasting a two run homer, but the Biscuits again had an answer. In the bottom of the frame, against reliever Brad Nelson, Ronnie Merrill set the table with a one-out single, and John Jaso and Chris Nowak produced two-out runs. Jaso scorched a double to score Merrill and then scored on a long triple by Nowak.

Houser allowed two more runs in the fifth on a two-run double by rehabbing big league Martin Prado, but Houser got out of a jam by making a play at home and then inducing an inning-ending double play. The Biscuits' bullpen of Eddie Morlan (1.2 IP), Brian Henderson (0.1 IP), Ryan Reid (1.2 IP) and Roger Deago (0.1 IP) pitched scoreless baseball the rest of the way, though they experienced some breathless moments in the ninth.

Montgomery evened the score in the sixth inning on a two-run, two-out double by Nowak, and J.T. Hall scored the eventual game-winner in the eighth on a double by Merrill.

In the ninth, back-to-back one out singles by Javier Guzman and Jose Camarena against Reid put Braves on the corners. Reid struck out and then walked Prado, leaving Deago a bases-loaded, two-out situation. Jordan Schafer hit a Deago pitch roughly 390 feet to center field, but Erold Andrus made a running grab in front of the wall to seal the victory.

Game two of the series is Tuseday night, with David Price (1-0) making his Riverwalk Stadium debut against Deunte Heath (1-1). Gametime is 7:05.
