Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (72-59) opened up their five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies (64-65) with a bang, taking down their North Division rivals in emphatic fashion, 10-2, in the series opener on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits still lead the second Half North Division standings by four games with nine game to play in the regular season.
Spencer Jones opened for the Biscuits, and after a scoreless first, the righty handed things over to J.D. Martin (8-10), who picked up his first home win of the season in his 11th appearance at Riverwalk Stadium-his first out of the bullpen. The knuckleballer threw 5.1 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and four walks to go along with a strikeout in the victory.
Miles Mastrobuoni, who has been excellent since arriving from A+ Charlotte on Monday, opened the scoring for the Biscuits with an RBI-single in the second off Tennessee starter Matt Swarmer (4-5). An inning later, Lucius Fox poked a sac fly into right to double the Biscuits lead to 2-0.
The Smokies would answer back with a Wynton Bernard RBI-single in the fourth, before the Biscuits erupted with a four-run sixth. A Jesus Sanchez RBI-double, a Nathan Lukes RBI-single, and a Mastrobuoni two-run single put Montgomery up, 6-1, in that inning, as the Butter and Blue brought nine batters to the plate.
The Smokies would threaten in the seventh, loading the bases against Martin and then scoring on a bases-loaded walk thrown by Matt Krook to make it 6-2, but the lefty then struck out Jesse Hodges and Eddy Martinez to end the threat.
In the eighth the Biscuits ripped off four more runs on a two-run double by David Rodriguez and a two-run triple by Jake Cronenworth that proved to be the two cherries on top to the eight-run victory.
The Biscuits will try to make it back-to-back victories on Saturday when Brock Burke (5-1) takes on Justin Steele (NR) on Saturday at 6:05 PM CT when it will be Alabama/Auburn Night, presented by 95.1 The Fox, and MAX Fireworks. The rest of the current 10-game home stand includes AUM Night, featuring a 2019 Schedule Poster Giveaway, on Sunday, August 26, and Fan Appreciation Night on Tuesday, August 28.
