Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - Michael Mader W, 5-3) tossed a season-high 7.0 innings to help the Mississippi Braves (61-67, 32-26) shutout the Biloxi Shuckers (76-55, 35-26) on Friday night 3-0 to open the final homestand of the season. With the win, the M-Braves moved into a tie for second place in the Southern League South Division standings, just 1.5 games behind the Shuckers.
The Braves furnished Mader a lead by getting on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning. Travis Demeritte opened the inning with his 21st double down the left field line. Tyler Marlette flew out to deep right-center fielder moving Demeritte to third. Luis Valenzuela brought Demeritte home on a shallow sacrifice fly to left and it was 1-0 Mississippi. Valenzuela entered play on Friday tied for fourth in the league with a .287 batting average.
The M-Braves tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Daniel Lockhart and Cristian Pache singled ahead of Alejandro Salazar, who singled home Lockhart to make it 2-0. Salazar finished the night 2-for-4. Tyler Neslony followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Pache and the Braves led 3-0.
Those three runs were plenty for Mader who turned in his best performance of the season, winning his second consecutive start. Over 7.0 innings of shutout baseball, the Marianna, FL native gave up just five hits while walking four and striking out five. It was his longest outings since a 7.0 inning performance on Aug. 24, 2016, against the Biloxi Shuckers.
Thomas Burrows (S, 3) took over for Mader in the eighth and pitched 2.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts to seal the clubs 10th shutout of the season. The win snapped Biloxi's six-game winning streak. Demeritte logged his 22nd multi-hit game of the season, ending the night 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The M-Braves and Biloxi Shuckers continue their five-game series on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
