Birmingham Starts Road Trip in Mississippi with a Victory

June 28, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons emerged victorious over the Mississippi Braves in Game 1 by a final score of 5-2. The Barons knocked their runs in early and rode some excellent pitching for the rest of the contest. Bryan Ramos was the star from the plate as he finished 2-5 with a run, three RBI and a home run. From the bump, the Barons used a collective of four pitchers to get the job done as all of them were key contributors to the outcome.

Ramos did give the Barons the jolt that they needed with his three-run blast, however, that did not take place until the fourth inning. Birmingham's offense had collected two runs prior to the four-run frame in the second inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Barons scored a pair from an Xavier Fernandez RBI double and a Moises Castillo RBI single. Fernandez and Castillo both finished the night 2-4 from the plate as well as both accounted for a run and brought in a run.

After the two-run frame, it was Ramos' turn for his monster three run blast. On base during the towering homer was Castillo and Tyler Neslony.

The offense had put the pitching staff in a great position to try and close out the game. The Barons starting RHP Cristian Mena was also prepping the bullpen for a chance to close out the game with his near flawless 5.0 IP.

The 20-year-old Mena dealt from the bump as he finished his start with three hits, three walks, five strikeouts and an earned run that came in the fifth inning. The Smokies were not able to figure out Mena's stuff until the fifth, and even then, only were able to muster up one run that came on a balk.

The Braves then collected another run on an RBI single in the sixth, however, those were the only runs they were able to tally.

Birmingham's bullpen took care of business the rest of the way in LHP Haylen Green and RHP Jerry Burke. Green finished his pair of innings with one hit, zero runs, one walk and three strikeouts. The left-hander also collected a hold, his third of the season.

Burke in his lone inning of work collected a save as well as only gave up one hit and strikeout one.

Birmingham kicked off the road series against Mississippi just as they would have liked: A win with all phases contributing. The Barons will look to add upon their terrific performance as they toss LHP Tommy Sommer on the bump for Game 2.
