Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - Behind three home runs and an eighth-inning bases-clearing double, the Biloxi Shuckers (35-35, 1-0) scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Mississippi Braves (33-35, 0-1), 9-3, in the series opener at MGM Park on Wednesday night.
The Shuckers opened the scoring early with a two-run home run from Jeferson Quero in the first. From there, starter Carlos Rodriguez dominated the M-Braves lineup. After loading the bases with no one out in the second, he retired the next three batters to work out of the inning. Then, between the third and fourth innings, he struck out four, all on change-ups.
In the fifth, he was lifted after his seventh strikeout of the night, becoming the second Southern League pitcher to reach 90 this season. The M-Braves then tied the game with a two-RBI single from Luke Waddell. Waddell scored later in the inning off a single from Cade Bunnell, but Jesse Franklin V was nabbed at the plate by left-fielder Lamar Sparks, only giving the M-Braves a 3-2 lead.
The Shuckers got the lead back in the sixth with a two-run home run from Freddy Zamora, his sixth of the year. An inning later, Tyler Black re-tied Jeferson Quero for the team lead with his 11th of the year, a solo shot to right. In the eighth, Sparks tallied his first RBI since being activated off the injured list with a single to right that scored Wes Clarke. Two batters later, Noah Campbell unloaded the bases with a double to left-center, giving Biloxi a 9-3 advantage.
Cam Robinson then entered for the ninth, and worked around a two-out single to close out the win. Russell Smith (1-2) earned the win for Biloxi while Alan Rangel (1-8) took the loss for Mississippi.
First pitch in game two of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. on Thursday. Justin Jarvis is set to start for the Shuckers against righty Scott Blewett.
Tomorrow night is Thirsty Thursday at MGM Park. Fans can enjoy $2 Yuengling drafts, hot dogs and sodas with $4 draft beer specials on Miller Lite. There's also the 'Thirsty Thursday Deal,' which includes a Reserved Level ticket and two drink vouchers for $14 in advance.
