BILOXI, MS - In the Southern League's second half opener, the Mississippi Braves (33-36, 0-1) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (35-35, 1-0) 9-3 on Wednesday night at MGM Park.
The Shuckers jumped ahead right away with a two-run homer by Jeferson Quero. The M-Braves got out of the inning on a tremendous diving catch by Jacob Pearson, who came off the club's injured list on Sunday.
In the second, the M-Braves loaded the bases but came up empty after three straight batters were retired. Tyler Tolve extended his on-base streak to 19 games with a walk in the inning. Tolve walked twice in the game. His on-base streak ties Javier Valdes for the longest on-base streak this season, who reached in 19 straight games from April 23 to June 1.
Down 2-0 in the fifth, Hudson Potts led off with a single. Cal Conley doubled to right to put two runners in scoring position. Luke Waddell beat out an infield single and scored two runs in the process to tie the game. After a hit batsman and a walk, the bases were loaded. Cade Bunnell laced a single to left field to score a run, but Jesse Franklin V was tagged out at home plate to end the inning with the M-Braves up 3-2.
Waddell went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and two RBI. The infielder leads the team with a .291 batting average. Bunnell went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Alan Rangel pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs. He exited after allowing a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
Biloxi blew the game open with a four-run eighth inning, including a bases clearing double by Noah Campbell. Justin Dean singled in the ninth, but the M-Braves failed to muster another baserunner in the final frame.
The second game of the series is on Thursday at MGM Park. RHP Scott Blewett (3-3, 3.95) will pitch for Mississippi while RHP Justin Jarvis (6-4, 3.30) will start for Biloxi. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
