Smokies' Comeback Falls Short in Game One

CHATTANOOGA, TN- The Smokies struck first in the top of the opening inning when Pete Crow-Armstrong walked and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Tennessee.In the third inning, With a runner on second and one out, Levi Jordan recorded his first Double-A hit of the season with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Haydn McGeary hit a 2 run home run to make it 4-0 Tennessee.

The Lookouts scored three runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to one run until McGeary struck again with a 2-RBI knock to extend the lead to 6-3. Chattanooga scored a run in the fifth inning on an Alex McGarry RBI single into right field, making the score 6-4 Tennessee in the fifth.

The sixth inning turned ugly for the Smokies allowing a lead-off home run to Daniel Vellojin to make it a one run ballgame. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Rece Hinds hit a bases clearing triple to take a 8-6 Chattanooga lead. The inning continued with a McGarry single to score the fifth run of the inning for the Lookouts.

Chattanooga led 10-6 heading into the ninth inning until Lookouts reliever Ryan Meisinger walked the bases loaded to start the inning. Smokies outfielder Owen Caissie made him pay with a bases clearing double to make it a 10-9 game. The next batter, McGeary clubbed a single into right field to tie the game at 10 apiece.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Hecht walked lead-off batter Jacob Hurtubuise, and then Jose Torres perfected a sacrifice bunt, advancing Hurtubise to second. The next batter Blake Dunn reached on a fielding error, and Hurtubuise advanced to third base. With runners on the corners and one out, Ivan Johnson swung at the first pitch he saw and lifted it deep enough into left field to score the winning run on a sacrifice fly. The Lookouts won by a final of 11-10.
