Birds Winning Streak Reaches Eight Games

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans completed a flawless 7-0 homestand with a 9-6 victory over the Kinston Indians in the series finale at BB&T Coastal Field in front of 3,771 fans. The Pelicans have won a season-high eight straight games. The Pelicans 76 wins are the most in all of Minor League Baseball.

The K-Tribe and the Pelicans traded runs in the first inning. Kinston took a 1-0 lead on a Carlos Rivero double that scored Beau Mills, who hit a two-out single. In the bottom of the first, Eric Campbell connected on his 17th home run of the season to square the game at one apiece.

The Pelicans built a 3-1 cushion in the third. Gorkys Hernandez led off with a single. Willie Cabrera, who went 3-4 with a run scored, followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Then, Eric Campbell hit a roller to short that Carlos Rivero threw over the head of first baseman Niuman Romero. Both Hernandez and Cabrera came into score.

In the fifth, the K-Tribe responded with two runs to tie the game at 3-3. Cristo Arnal hit a double to lead off the frame. One batter later, Carlos Santana blistered a line drive home run over the right-center field wall.

The Pelicans took the lead right back from Kinston in the home half of the fifth. Willie Cabrera recorded an RBI single to score Robert Marcial, who started the inning with a double to left field.

With the Pelicans in front 4-3, the K-Tribe tied the game on the strength of a solo home run by Carlos Rivero to lead off the sixth.

The Pelicans plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 edge. Kinston reliever Sung-Wei Tseng walked the first three batters of the inning. Travis Jones came into score on a double-play ball off the bat of Phillip Britton. Concepcion Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch.

The Pelicans held a 6-5 lead entering the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Randy Gress delivered a bases clearing double over the head of right fielder Cirilo Cumberbatch to give the Birds a 9-5 lead.

Brett Butts pitched well in his first professional start. In five innings, he allowed five hits and three runs. Dustin Evans earned the win in two innings of relief, while Nick Fellman picked up his sixth save of the season.

The Pelicans play game one against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday, August 7th at 7:05 p.m in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Pelicans will send LHP Scott Diamond (10-1, 3.07) to the hill.
