Tribe falters in Myrtle Beach

The Kinston Indians smacked a pair of game-tying home runs in the fifth and sixth, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored two runs without a hit in their half of the sixth, winning 9-6, Wednesday night. The win gave the Pelicans a sweep of the three-game series, moving them to 6.5 games in front of Kinston and the Winston-Salem Warthogs for first place in the Carolina League Southern Division. Carlos Santana's two-run homer in the fifth inning tied the score at three, with the Pelicans getting a run back in the bottom half. Carlos Rivero hit a solo homer off the scoreboard to make it 4-4 in the sixth.
Sung-Wei Tseng came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth for the K-Tribe, and walked the bases loaded to start the inning. Pelicans catcher Phillip Britton plated a run on a double play groundout, and the second run scored on a wild pitch from Tseng to make the score 6-4.
The Indians got a run back on an error by Pelicans' first baseman Ernesto Mejia who misplayed a popup with runners at first and third. The Pelicans broke it open in the eighth with a three-run double by Randy Gress with the bases loaded. The Indians got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, and Niuman Romero got an infield single to drive in a run and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Johnny Drennen struck out looking to end the ballgame.
Hector Rondon went five innings for the Indians, allowing four runs, three earned, picking up a no decision and failing to grab his third straight win. Dustin Evans picked up the win for Myrtle Beach with two innings of relief.
The Indians will try to get back on the winning track,coming home to Historic Grainger Stadium for a seven-game homestand to take on the Salem Avalanche for a four-game set. They have won six straight over the Avs, including a four-game sweep last weekend in Virginia. Kelvin De La Cruz gets the start in the 7:00 PM game, where the first 1,000 fans 21 or older will receive a refreezeable pint glass.
