Avalanche retaliates in huge way

Frederick, MD-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored more runs Wednesday night than it ever had against the Frederick Keys in a 20-9 bludgeoning of the home team at Harry Grove Stadium. One night after being no-hit, Salem (16-28) had five separate players score runs in the game against Frederick (18-28).

Leading 3-2, the Avalanche batted around in the fifth inning against a trio of Keys pitchers. With Collin DeLome at first, Koby Clemens slammed a 2-1 pitch from Pedro Beato over the right field wall for a two-run home run. That was the final act for Beato who was replaced by Scott Mueller. The righty walked the next two batters and allowed a bunt single to Greg Buchanan. On the play, catcher Justin Johnson uncorked a ball past first base to allow Orlando Rosales home. Next, Roberto Mena singled to left to score Nick Moresi and give the Avs a 7-2 lead. After a strikeout, Tim Torres doubled to left to plate two. Immediately following, Mark Ori homered, his third longball of the year against the Keys.

After a Nick Moresi home run in the sixth and a two-run extra-base hit for Greg Buchanan in the seventh, the Avs batted around again in the eighth. With Cesar Quintero on, Tim Torres drubbed a ball to left for an RBI double and Salem's 15th run. After a pair of walks, Koby Clemens split the right-center field gap for a two-run double and the 16th and 17th tallies. An RBI groundout from Orlando Rosales and Buchanan RBI single followed. The final run crossed in the ninth on an RBI groundout off of Collin DeLome's bat.

Salem's abundant career highs include four runs and four hits for Tim Torres, a career-best-tying five RBI and three runs for Koby Clemens and a career-high-tying three runs for Nick Moresi. Every Salem player scored at least once and each Salem batter except Mark Ori walked. Of the starters, only Cesar Quintero did not post an RBI

On the mound, the Avalanche got six innings from Chad Wagler in his first victory as a starter in '08. He allowed just five hits and three runs.

The Avalanche heads to Kinston for a seven o'clock start Thursday at Grainger Stadium against Kinston as lefty Sergio Severino throws for the Avs against Kinston's Kelvin de la Cruz.
