SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds could not withstand an offensive onslaught from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans as they fell 17-3 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The 17 runs for the Pelicans (6-5) are the second most the Shorebirds (5-6) have allowed this season.

Myrtle Beach started the scoring in the second with two away as Yeison Santana swatted an RBI double. After a James Triantos single put men at the corners, Triantos kicked off a double steal with Santana scampering home from third on the back end to make it 2-0.

Kevin Alcantara brought in another run in the third with an RBI groundout pushing the Pelicans lead out to 3-0.

The first two reached for the Pelicans to start the fourth and after a strikeout , a throwing error allowed a run to score before a walk loaded the bases. After another strikeout, Alcantara blooped in a two-run single to center, making it 6-0 Myrtle Beach.

Darell Hernaiz got the Shorebirds on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to cut it to 6-1.

The Pelicans busted the game open with a ten-run sixth. Myrtle Beach loaded the bases to start the frame before Jacob Wetzel walked to force in a run. A groundball resulted in a throwing error which plated another run before a Peter Matt infield single forced in another. After an infield fly, Miguel Fabrizio wiped the bases clear with a three-run double making it 12-1 Myrtle Beach. Liam Spence brought in Fabrizio with a sacrifice fly and Pete Crow-Armstrong capped the frame with a three-run homer to make it 16-1.

Hernaiz swatted his second homer of the game, his fourth of the year, in the bottom of the sixth. The two-run shot made it 16-3.

Myrtle Beach tacked on one more in the eighth for good measure on a Wetzel RBI fielder's choice.

Jose Miguel Gonzalez (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for Myrtle Beach. Gonzalez allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out seven.

Shane Davis (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Delmarva. Davis conceded five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out four.

The multi-homer game for Hernaiz was the first of his career.

The Shorebirds and Pelicans go at it again on Thursday, April 21 at Perdue Stadium for game two of the series. Daniel Federman (0-1, 10.13) is slated to go for Delmarva while Myrtle Beach sends out Luke Little (0-0, 4.91). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
