Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Billy Rowell hit a first inning two-RBI single in his Delmarva debut to help lead the Shorebirds to their third consecutive victory, an 8-4 decision over the Lake County Captains.

With the bases loaded, the ninth overall selection of the 2006 Draft swung and missed at the first two pitches he saw from Captains starter Jeanmar Gomez. He laid off a couple of more offerings before lacing a single up the middle to score David Cash and Brandon Snyder and get the Shorebirds off to a quick start. Brandon Tripp, returning to the lineup after spending almost three weeks on the DL with a wrist injury, followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Chris Vinyard for a 3-0 Delmarva lead. Rowell went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in his Shorebirds debut, while Tripp had a double in three at bats.

Kyle Schmidt continued the strong starting pitching for Delmarva in this homestand. He went six innings and allowed only one earned run on five hits while striking out six. After Jose Maria allowed three runs in the seventh, Wilfredo Perez did a fantastic job closing out the game. Perez went two innings and allowed only a hit and struck out five Captains, including striking out the side in the ninth.

The Captains played sloppy defense in the bottom of the fifth to help blow the game wide open for Delmarva. With a runner at first and two outs, Tripp double to right and right fielder Roman Pena bobbled the ball in the outfield, allowing Brandon Snyder to score. Miguel Abreu then reached on a throwing error by shortstop Carlos Rivero, scoring Tripp for a 5-1 lead. Victor Castillo followed by also reaching on a error, this time by first baseman Matthew Whitney to score Abreu, Pedro Florimon ended the scoring in the fifth with his first home run of the season, extending the lead to 8-1 on the two-run shot to right.

The Shorebirds, winners of five out of their last six games, have a chance to sweep the Captains to end their eight-game homestand tomorrow night.
