Memphis Redbirds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds (20-12) beat the Nashville Sounds (15-15) 4-1, Monday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. The win snapped Memphis' four-game losing streak.
The Redbirds scored four runs this afternoon, one shy of the total number of runs they had scored during their four-game skid.
Daniel Poncedeleon got the ball for Memphis, and pitched a solid six innings after struggling his last time out. The righty threw 6.0 innings, only allowing one run on two hits and three walks. He also struck out eight Nashville batters.
Nashville scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Poncedeleon walked the first two batters to leadoff, and Nashville moved them over on a sacrifice bunt. A fielder's choice from BJ Boyd allowed Nashville's only run to score one batter later.
The Redbirds' bats responded quickly in the fourth inning. Tyler O'Neill led off the inning with a single, and Luke Voit smashed his first home run of the season to put the 'Birds ahead for good. Rangel Ravelo doubled immediately after Voit's bomb, was moved over to third on a ground ball from Patrick Wisdom and scored one batter later on a sac fly from Adolis Garcia. The 'Birds added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a single from Alex Mejia.
Arturo Reyes came on in relief of Poncedeleon in the seventh, and pitched two dominant innings. The righty shutout the Sounds, allowing just one hit, and striking out five of the seven batters he faced. Preston Guilmet closed out the game for the 'Birds in the ninth. He struck out two batters in the frame to notch his sixth save of the season.
Mejia and Wisdom both had two-hit performances for Memphis, while only two total Nashville batters managed hits this afternoon.
The Redbirds will stay on their road trip through Friday at Oklahoma City. The Redbirds return to AutoZone Park for four games starting on Saturday the 12th. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
