Tacoma Rainiers News Release
RENO, Nevada - A strong start from left-hander Roenis Elias propelled the Tacoma Rainiers (14-17) to a 3-1 victory over the Reno Aces (13-19) on Monday afternoon at Greater Nevada Field.
Elias (1-1) delivered a gem for the Rainiers, allowing just one unearned run on five hits over six innings of work. He struck out four and walked just one while earning the win.
First baseman Daniel Vogelbach reached base five times on a 2-for-2, three walk performance that led the offense. Left fielder Cameron Perkins went 1-for-5 and drove in two runs, while catcher Chris Herrmann finished the afternoon 1-for-1 with three walks.
The Rainiers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI single from Herrmann. However, the Aces would go on to tie the game up at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the second.
Vogelbach kick started a two-out rally for Tacoma in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. He laced a double to the wall in right and set up an RBI base knock from Perkins that pushed the Rainiers back out in front, 2-1.
Tacoma picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning - center fielder Ian Miller singled to open the frame, stole second, moved to third on a groundout to the right side, and came across to score on a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of Perkins. Miller's extra run gave the Rainiers a 3-1 edge.
Ryan Cook earned his first save of the season with a perfect bottom of the ninth that sealed the Rainiers victory. Shawn Armstrong (2.0 IP) bridged the gap between Elias and Cook, striking out two while allowing no baserunners.
Tacoma's road trip now moves on to El Paso where the Rainiers will face off against the Chihuahuas for the first time this season. Tacoma left-hander Ariel Miranda (2-0, 5.03) will face off against El Paso right-hander Brett Kennedy (3-0, 2.45) in the opener on Tuesday night at 5:35 p.m. PT.
