Peralta Shines as Sky Sox Hand Dodgers First Home Loss
May 7, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After dropping the first three games of this four-game series, the Sky Sox rallied to take game four on Monday morning to avoid the sweep, defeating the Dodgers 5-3 to hand Oklahoma City their first home loss of the season.
After scoring only four total runs in the first three games of this series (one on both Friday and Saturday, two on Sunday), the Sky Sox started game four off by scoring four runs in the top of the second alone, sending eight men to the plate in the inning. Ji-Man Choi hit a solo home run in the first at-bat of the second frame, exactly as he did in yesterday's contest. Shane Opitz reached on a one-out single, then scored on a Gabriel Noriega double. Quintin Berry tacked on an RBI single to make it 3-0, moving up to second on a Freddy Peralta sacrifice bunt. Kyle Wren singled to right field to score Berry from second and put the Sky Sox up 4-0 early.
Peralta struck out Jake Peter to start off the bottom of the fourth inning, marking his sixth strikeout of the day through ten batters, all of whom Peralta had retired. Donovan Solano drew a four-pitch walk in the next at-bat to give Oklahoma City their first baserunner of the day, followed by another walk to Rob Segedin to put two on for the Dodgers. Henry Ramos, who has been especially good at home in Oklahoma City this season, struck out for the second out of the inning and Peralta's seventh strikeout victim of the day. Travis Taijeron struck out as well to end the inning, as Peralta left the two men he walked stranded with his eighth strikeout in four innings.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning Rocky Gale lined a single for the Dodgers' first hit of the day. Mike Ahmed followed that up with another single to put two on, with a deep fly advancing both runners to second and third with two outs. Peter drew a walk to nearly load the bases, but Colorado Springs catcher Christian Bethancourt threw down to third behind Gale after ball four to Peter, picking Gale off at third in a heads-up play to end the inning and cut the Oklahoma rally short.
After four innings without a score change, Colorado Springs scored again in the top of the seventh to extend their lead. Berry drew a five-pitch walk, then promptly stole second for his first steal of the season. Wren singled to score Berry from second, just as he had done in the second inning, to make it 5-0.
The Dodgers didn't go quietly, however, putting together a rally in the bottom of the final frame in an attempt to keep their home winning streak alive. Danny Espinosa led off the inning with a single, followed by a single off the bat of Gale. Logan Landon broke the shutout with an RBI force out to make it 5-1 for his first RBI with OKC this season. Peter singled to score Landon and keep the game alive as the Dodgers made it 5-2 with just one out left to work with. Solano singled to score Peter and cut the Sky Sox lead to just two runs, but a Segedin strikeout brought the game, the rally, and the winning streak to and end as Colorado Springs won with a final of 5-3.
Tomorrow's first game against the Nashville Sounds is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. MST at First Tennessee Park. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field for an eight-game, nine-day homestand on May 12 where they will host the Oklahoma City Dodgers and Memphis Redbirds. NOTES
Tomorrow's Expectation: In the first game of the four-game series against the Nashville Sounds the Sky Sox are sending righty Alec Asher to the mound to face fellow righty James Naile for Nashville. The last time Colorado Springs played Nashville was less than a week ago on 5/3, when the contest was suspended after eight innings due to travel restraints.
Strikeout City: Freddy Peralta struck out eight batters through four innings on Monday, the day after Corbin Burnes struck out 13 batters through seven innings. That's 21 strikeouts through 11 innings between Peralta's and Burnes' back-to-back starts.
Perfect No More: With the win Sunday afternoon the Dodgers improved to a perfect 15-0 at home in Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, but the Sky Sox ended that streak with a win on Monday.
Always On: Kyle Wren has now reached base safely in all 16 games with the Sky Sox this season after going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI on Monday. The West Palm Beach, FL native is batting .364 (20-for-52) with 10 runs, 3 doubles, a triple, 113 RBI, and six walks this season. Kyle Wren's single on Friday night was his 319th regular season hit with the Sky Sox, passing Jim Tatum for sole possession of 14th place on the Sky Sox all-time hits list, and could move up several spots during this road trip. The single also marked his 248th regular season single with the Sky Sox, passing Jason Bates for sole possession of sixth place on the all-time singles list.
Burnes' Baker's Dozen: After striking out 13 on Sunday, Corbin Burnes becomes only the fourth Sky Sox pitcher in team history to record 13 or more strikeouts in a game. Burnes ties Edwar Cabrera and the late Mark Brownson as the other two pitchers with 13 strikeouts in a game. The single game record is held by John Thomson, with 14 strikeouts. The Sky Sox home record is 12 K, by Nate Minchey, vs. Tucson Sidewinders, June 4th, 1997 (12 K in 9 IP) [CG], and by Mike Saipe, vs. Vancouver Canadians, May 15th, 1998 (12 K in 9 IP) [CG].)
Low Hits: The Sky Sox tied for a season low in hits (4) on Saturday, which was set on April 7 in game two of a doubleheader in Omaha. The four hits were totaled throughout the third, fifth, and sixth innings. The only multi-hit inning for the Sky Sox came in the third inning with back-to-back two-out singles to load the bases.
Dubon Extends to 23: Mauricio Dubon extended his hit streak to 23 games Saturday night, marking the third longest hit streak in franchise history. The Honduras native has gone 35-for-99 over 23 games with 18 runs, four home runs, 17 RBI, and five stolen bases. His longest recorded streak in 2017 with the Sky Sox was seven games. Alumnus at 23 includes Garrett Atkins (2004), Ben Patrick (2000), Neifi Perez (1996), and Wayne Kirby (1992).
Streak In Comparison: Mauricio Dubon's 23-game hit streak marks the longest for a Sky Sox player during their affiliation with the Milwaukee Brewers, and the longest hitting streak by a Sky Sox player since Matt Murton tied the team record of 29 straight games in 2009. The previous longest Sky Sox hitting streak during the Milwaukee Brewers affiliation was set last season by Lewis Brinson, a 20-game hitting streak from June 29th to August 5th, 2017. The longest hitting streak in Sky Sox history is 29 games, shared by Trenidad Hubbard (July 5th[Game 1] to August 7th, 1995) and by Matt Murton (April 15th-17th and June 6th-21st, 2009).
Orf Trending: Speaking of streaks... Nate Orf has himself a 17-game streak, which was continued Sunday afternoon. In 17 games, Orf has gone 29-for-65 with 14 runs, 13 RBI, and four stolen bases. His longest streak last season was nine games.
Swipin' Bagsss: The three stolen bases Friday night by Mauricio Dubon ties the Sky Sox record for stolen bases in a road game, done five other times. The other five: Reggie Taylor, July 27th, 1991 at Las Vegas, Wayne Kirby, May 9th, 1992 at Phoenix, Trenidad Hubbard, June 19th, 1995 at Vancouver (Game 1 of DH), Eric Young, Jr., July 28th, 2010 at Sacramento, Orlando Arcia, April 26th, 2016 at Omaha. The club record for stolen bases in a game is four, done three times, all at home in Colorado Springs (Jeff Huson, August 30th, 1996, home vs. Albuquerque; Luis Sardiñas, May 1st, 2015, home vs. Omaha; Kyle Wren, July 4th, 2017, home vs. Nashville.)
This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox are currently in the midst of an eight-game road trip. After playing four games in Oklahoma City against the Dodgers, the Sky Sox re set for another four-game series against the Nashville Sounds before returning home on the 12th for an eight-game, nine-day homestand that will see them host the Dodgers for four games followed by the Memphis Redbirds for four games.
