Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds soundly defeated the Hagerstown Suns on Friday evening, by the final score of 8-3 in the series opener. Delmarva (54-44, 16-13) rode a strong pitching performance from their ace Hunter Harvey and contributions from up and down the lineup.
Harvey came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. The Shorebirds' right-hander struck out the first four batters he faced. In total, Harvey allowed just two hits and one run in five innings while racking up eight strikeouts.
Delmarva struck first in the second inning. Chance Sisco led off with a walk, and he came around to score when Anthony Vega beat out an infield single on a slow roller to shortstop. After a stolen base for Vega, Gregory Lorenzo lined an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Hagerstown cut the Delmarva lead in half with a run in the fourth inning, but that was the closest the Suns would come. The Shorebirds scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to build an 8-1 lead. Sisco singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, the longest by a Shorebird this season.
In the sixth, Delmarva scored four runs as they strung together five consecutive singles. The damage could have been more, but the Shorebirds made a couple baserunning errors. Sisco overran Creede Simpson on a two-run single for an out. Austin Wynns delivered an RBI single, but he got into a rundown to end the inning.
The Suns scored twice in the eighth, but the outcome was never in doubt. Garrett Cortright worked a perfect ninth inning to seal the 8-3 win. Hunter Harvey improved to 7-4 with the victory while Jake Johansen fell to 5-5.
The Shorebirds and Suns will continue the series with game two on Saturday evening. Right-hander Janser Severino (1-0, 3.6) will start for Delmarva against top prospect Lucas Giolito (4-2, 2.47) for Hagerstown. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
