Savannah Takes Series Opener over Legends 5-1

(SAVANNAH, GA) Behind strong pitching by starter Robert Gsellman, the Savannah Sand Gnats took a 5-1 victory over the Lexington Legends Friday night.

The Sand Gnats took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Consecutive singles by Nelfi Zapata, Jorge Rivero and Victor Cruzado loaded the bases with no outs, and Colton Plaia and Patrick Biondi followed with sacrifice flies to give the Savannah a 2-0 lead.

The Legends answered with a run in the third. With two outs, Frank Schwindel walked, moved to second on a single by Mauricio Ramos, and scored when Elier Hernandez grounded a single off the glove of shortstop Yeixon Ruiz.

Savannah added a run in the third. Zapata singled and moved to second on an error by Hernandez in center field. Rivero grounded to shortstop Kenny Diekroeger behind second, and Zapata came around to score when Diekroeger threw past first for an error.

Champ Stuart had a run-scoring single in the fourth for Savannah, and the Sand Gnats added their final run in the eighth on Yeixon Ruiz' RBI single.

Gsellman (8-4) got the win after working six and two-thirds innings. He struck out 10 batters and walked one.

Legends starter Matt Tenuta (4-8) took the loss.

The series continues Saturday. Game time is 6:05 p.m.
