
Birds Reclaim I-29 Trophy with 10-1 Win

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (13-12) reclaimed the I-29 Rivalry Trophy for the first time since 2001 with a 10-1 victory over the Sioux City Explorers (13-12) on Tuesday night at the Birdcage.
The Canaries got the runs going in the bottom of the third. Matt Imwalle singled to lead off the inning. Orlando Miller singled to center and Explorers' centerfielder Jason Tuttle bobbled the ball. The error allowed Imwalle to move to third and Miller to second. James Shanks singled up the middle, scoring Imwalle and Miller to give the Canaries a 2-0 advantage. After Juan Figueroa singled putting runners on the corners, Ben Van Iderstine singled through the left side to drive in Imwalle and give the Birds a 3-0 lead.
The Explorers scored their only run in the top of the fourth. Jorge Moreno and Alex Llanos put together back to back singles. Paul Weichard followed with a ground ball to first baseman Juan Figueroa. Figueroa threw home to prevent Moreno from scoring, but Moreno got back to the bag safely. After the fielder's choice, the bases were loaded for Billy Cox. Cox hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Moreno from third to get Sioux City on the board, 3-1 Canaries.
The Canaries came right back in the bottom of the fourth with a run of their own. Trevor Lawhorn hit his sixth home run of the season to put the Birds back up by three, 4-1.
The scoring continued through the sixth inning. Lawhorn and Imwalle singled. Tim Marks followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and ended up reaching on an error by Explorers' pitcher, Brian Buchanan. The error allowed Lawhorn to score and put Imwalle and Marks in scoring position, 5-1. Marks moved to third and Imwalle came around to score on a wild pitch for a 6-1 lead. Miller hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Marks, 7-1. James Shanks singled through the left side and scored on a double by Juan Figueroa, putting the Birds up, 8-1. Van Iderstine doubled down the left field line, driving in Figueroa. At the end of six, the Canaries led 9-1.
The Birds put one more run on the board in the home half of the seventh inning. Lawhorn singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matt Imwalle advanced Lawhorn to third with a bunt single. After Tim Marks was hit by a pitch, pushing Cameron Coughlan hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Lawhorn to cross home plate, giving the Canaries the final run of the game in their 10-1 victory.
Pat Mahomes (9-3) pitched his third complete game of the season, allowing only one run on eight hits and striking out eight batters. Brian Buchanan (4-9) suffered the loss for the Explorers giving up nine runs, five earned, on 12 hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The Canaries and Explorers face off in the third game of the series on Wednesday night where the Birds will have a "Salute to the 80's Night."
