LAKEWOOD, NJ - Gray Fenter threw five perfect innings with 11 strikeouts to lead Delmarva to a ___ win over the BlueClaws on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Fenter (8-2) struck out seven of the first eight hitters he faced, six of which went down looking. He ultimately fanned 11 on the night in earning his eighth win.
Delmarva (49-22/87-45) had lost the first game of this four-game set to Lakewood (27-35/56-76) on Monday night.
The Shorebirds broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the third inning off starter Victor Santos. Johnny Rizer opened the scoring with a two-run single to right field. Toby Welk added an RBI single off Santos, who was then removed. Shayne Fontana greeted Gilmael Troya with an RBI single and the BlueClaws fell behind 4-0.
Santos (5-10) was charged with all four runs over 2.2 innings of work. He walked two and struck out two. Adley Rutschman, the top overall pick in this year's draft, hit a two-run home run off Gilmael Troya in the sixth inning. It was Rutschman's first Delmarva home run and third professional home run.
Matt Hammonds threw four scoreless innings in relief to earn his second save.
Lakewood was held to just three hits, two by Malvin Matos and one by Yerwin Trejo. Matos is now 42-114 since July 16th, raising his average from .195 to .251.
Albertus Barber threw a scoreless ninth for the BlueClaws.
The teams continue their series on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. LHP Josh Hendrickson (0-1) starts for Lakewood opposite LHP Drew Rom (6-3).
