Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - In a near-perfect display of offensive prowess, the Delmarva Shorebirds dismantled the Greensboro Grasshoppers 20-2 on Wednesday night at First National Bank Field.
Cameron Bishop (7-4) benefitted from 19 of those runs but still did his job well for the Shorebirds (4-3, 39-35), allowing one run on three hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three on the way to his team-best ninth Quality Start. Scott Sebald (0-1) took the loss in his Grasshoppers (4-2, 38-37) debut, surrendering six runs on seven hits over three innings.
Kirvin Moesquit set the tone for the whole night, leading off the game with a home run to left. Zach Jarrett followed two batters later with a single, then after a flyout and Jean Carrillo walk, Branden Becker clubbed a two-run double, giving Delmarva a 3-0 lead before Greensboro had a chance to bat.
The Grasshoppers' best chance to score all night came in the bottom of the second. Will Allen led off with a double, then Isael Soto singled to move him up to third. Marcos Rivera lifted a sac fly to right to score Allen and make it 3-1. A hit batsman and walk loaded the bases, but Bishop struck out Garvas Lara and Thomas Jones to get out of the jam, and Greensboro had to settle for just one run.
Delmarva countered with three more in the top of the third. Becker hit a two-out Baltimore chop over third base that became a double, and Will Robertson doubled him home immediately after. Up came Chris Shaw, who belted a laser to left for a two-run homer, his second in as many nights, to put the Shorebirds up 6-1.
The fun continued in the fourth. Moesquit doubled to lead off, and Jarrett singled him home two batters later. After a fielder's choice, Delmarva got two-out hits from Carrillo, Becker, Robertson, and Shaw, producing three more runs to boost the lead to 10-1. Another came home in the fifth on an error, Mason McCoy dobule, and RBI groundout from Trevor Craport, making it 11-1.
The Shorebirds really poured it on in the seventh inning. Moesquit led off with a single, then Jarrett walked two batters later. Craport revved up the machine with a three-run homer to make it 14-1. After a groundout, Becker restarted the rally with a two-out walk. Robertson singled and Shaw got hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Max Hogan drew a walk to force in a run and Moesquit, batting for the second time in the inning, singled home another. McCoy provided the knockout punch, tripling to right center to clear the bases and put Delmarva up 19-1.
Craport provided the exclamation point in the eighth with a solo home run, his second of the game, to break 20 on the scoreboard.
Greensboro got one back in the bottom of the ninth on a Michael Hernandez sac fly.
In a banner night for all involved, Robertson accounted for the greatest share of the team's season-high 22 hits, going 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBIs. Craport finished 2-for-6 with a home run, three runs scored, and five RBIs. Moesquit went 4-for-7 with the leadoff home run, a double, two RBIs, and five runs scored.
Becker doubled twice, drove in three runs, and scored three himself. Both Moesquit and McCoy came one component shy of the cycle (Moesquit the triple, McCoy the home run). The team combined to hit 11-for-21 with men in scoring position on the night.
Rivera drove in a run and scored another for the Grasshoppers.
The Shorebirds go back to the well against the Grasshoppers on Thursday night. Brenan Hanifee (6-3, 2.61) gets the nod for Delmarva against Greensboro's Brandon Miller (2-6, 5.59). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:45 with Will DeBoer on the call.
