Birds Fall on Friday Night to RiverDogs 7-5

After winning the first two games of the series, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped Friday night's game to the Charleston RiverDogs 7-5. With the loss, the Birds fell to 42-29 and 3-3 in the second half. Charleston improved to 30-42 with a 3-3 second half record as well.

Rafael Morel (3-4) led the Myrtle Beach lineup with three singles and a run scored. Ismael Mena (1-4, HR, RBI) hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the third. Parker Chavers (0-2, 2 BB) extended his on-base streak to 18 games by walking twice.

Starter Marino Santy (1-1) took his first loss of the year with four runs, three earned allowed across his 3 2/3 innings off seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Jose Romero and Stephen Gonsalves kept the RiverDogs at seven runs with 3 1/3 combined innings of shutout baseball. The pitching staff struck out 11 in the loss.

The RiverDogs tallied their most hits in a game this season with Chandler Simpson (3-4, BB) hitting three singles with two runs scored and a walk to reach base three times. Ryan Spikes (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) smacked two hits with a pair of runs brought home. Four of Charleston's nine hits were doubles in the victory.

After his seven-inning outing last week, Trevor Martin (3-4) took the win by stretching out 5 2/3 innings with three earned runs off four hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Jack Hartman followed him with 1 1/3 shutout frames.

Charleston jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first three innings. With Simpson on third, Xavier Isaac doubled to right field to bring him home for the game's first run. Spikes followed by taking the next pitch to left for another RBI double and an early 2-0 lead.

Another run was scored in the top of the second on an RBI single by Julio Meza with Jhon Diaz on third to bring him home.

Charleston's early-game tirade continued with a run in the third. With Spikes on third, Enderson Delgado hit a fly ball to Morel in right. Spikes was held at third until Morel's throw in went wild and Spikes came home for a 4-0 RiverDogs' lead.

The Pelicans' first run came in the bottom of the third with two outs. Mena took a 1-0 pitch to right field for his first home run of the season to cut the lead to 4-1.

Three walks by Angel Hernandez loaded the bases for the RiverDogs in the top of the fifth with one out. Christopher Bareta came up and grounded out to first as Odalys Peguero scored from third to push the lead back to 5-1.

Myrtle Beach made it a two-run game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on second and third, David Avitia lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Pedro Ramirez moved from second to third on the play, and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3 RiverDogs.

Both runs came back for Charleston in the top half of the inning. With runners on second and third, Spikes hit a sacrifice fly to left. Peguero followed with an RBI single to right as Xavier Isaac scored to put Charleston up 7-3.

The Pelicans chipped away with a run in the eighth and ninth innings. After a lead-off double, Cristian Hernandez came home on a groundout to third by Andy Garriola in the eighth.

The pressure was put on by the Birds in the ninth. Chavers walked and Morel hit a single to bring the tying run to the plate with runners on the corners. Ramirez followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Chavers. Jefferson Rojas came in as a pinch-hitter and grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

Red, White, and Blue weekend continued on Saturday as the Pelicans take on the RiverDogs at 7:05 p.m.
