St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-14) suffered their sixth consecutive defeat in a 4-2 loss to the St. Paul Saints (11-9) on Thursday night at Midway Stadium.

The Birds started the scoring in the first inning. Tim Hutting reached on an error by Saints shortstop Steve Butler. Cody Haerther singled to right field to advance Hutting to third base, and Beau Torbert brought Hutting home when he grounded into a fielder's choice. Hutting's run gave the Birds an early 1-0 lead.

St. Paul took the lead in the fourth inning. With two men on base, Brent Krause singled to score Andrew Schmiesing and tie the game, 1-1. After an error on Canaries third baseman Trevor Lawhorn kept the Birds from recording the second out of the inning, Jeff Eure hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Jason Cooper. After four innings the Saints were in front, 2-1.

The Saints added a run in each the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth, Alex Fonseca walked and scored on a single by Cooper for a 3-1 Saints lead. An inning later, Scott Knazek doubled and came in on a single by Fonseca. Knazek's run gave the Saints a three-run cushion, 4-1.

The Canaries tried to rally in the ninth. Patrick Reilly and J.D. Reininger opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A groundout by Ken Lup put the runners on second and third for Joe Anthonsen. Joe Anthonsen grounded out to score Reilly and get Reininger to third with the Birds down by two, 4-2. However, Saints closer Kerry Lightenberg got Hutting to foul out to end the game.

Ryan Ford (2-8) gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits in six innings to take the loss. Tom Buske (3-2) gave up just one unearned run on seven hits in seven innings to get the win for the Saints. Lightenberg closed out the ballgame for his 13th save of the season.

The Canaries return home tomorrow to open a three-game weekend series with the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow's game will feature "Friday Night Fireworks" presented by Sanford Health.
