Woodstock-Themed Homestand This Friday-Saturday

The Pensacola Pelicans are excited to announce a weekend celebrating the 40th anniversary of Woodstock beginning on Friday, July 31, 2009 and ending on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Pelican Park. Tickets are on sale now for this weekend of tie-dye, fireworks, music and fun. Pelicans baseball is affordable family fun with tickets starting at just $7 each.

The celebration of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock promises to transport fans back to the peace, love, and happiness days of 1969 and, for added effect, fans are encouraged to dress in themed attire.

Friday, July 31 - The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Pelicans logo t-shirt. There will be tie-dye stations set up throughout the game for fans to tie-dye their own shirts in true Woodstock fashion. Saturday, August 1 - Fans can enjoy a spectacular fireworks display, sponsored by Circle K and WEAR TV3. The Pelicans will also welcome the local band, Jerry's Kids, a tribute band to the Grateful Dead, who performed at the original Woodstock in 1969.

Sunday, August 2 - It's Kids Day at Pelican Park. All kids club members get in free with their 2009 Kids Club t-shirt. Membership is only $10 and is available at all Pelican home games. Also, fans that wear their Pelicans tie-dye shirt, will receive a free fountain drink.

The Pelicans are 8-2 in their last 10 games. The team swept the St. Paul Saints during the last home stand. After the all-star break, the team went on a North division tour, finishing 5-2 against Sioux City and Wichita. Fans, come have a groovy time at Pelican Park this weekend and cheer on your hometown team.

Fans can purchase tickets in advance and print from home via the Pelicans website: www.pensacolapelicans.com. Tickets are also available at Pensacola area Circle K locations, as well as the Pelicans box office on game days.

Pelicans Alumni Update

Just four days after being signed by the Oakland Athletics organization, former Pelicans Kyle Middleton made his first start for the Midland RockHounds, the double-A affiliate of the A's. Middleton was stellar for the Texas League team, pitching seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and yielding just three hits. Middleton was on the line for the win, but the San Antonio opponent tied the ballgame and forced extras. Middleton did not factor into the decision that ultimately saw Midland win their fourth extra-inning game in a row to stay a game and a half behind first place Frisco.

Meanwhile another former Pelican from this year continues his season in affiliated ball: Jimmy Mojica went 3-4 with a stolen base in his debut with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on June 28. The Seattle Mariners' double-A affiliate bought the rights to Mojica from the Pelicans earlier this season when Mojica was among the league leaders in average and acted as a spark plug at the top of the Pels' lineup. Mojica is currently hitting .186 for the Diamond Jaxx, slamming a home run on July 4 in a game that saw him finish 2-4 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.

Other former Pelicans include Jose Yepez, who played for Pensacola in 2006, and through July 5 was batting .310 with four home runs and five doubles in 25 games with the single-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Also, Paul Phillips (2008 Pelican) has posted a 2-0 record, an ERA of zero, and three saves for Tampa Bay's double-A affiliate in 12 games as of the fifth of July. Carlos Mendoza (2006) is playing for the Yankees' double-A squad and was hitting .286 through July 5.

Pelicans have even made it to the Bigs, as Edwar Ramirez started this season with the New York Yankees. The 2005 Pelican started the season strong, but lapsed into mediocre numbers that found Ramirez back in the minors. Ramirez is currently acting as a quasi-closer for the triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees of the International League. Ramirez posts a commendable 3.82 ERA, but has a losing record at 1-5. He's finished 12 games this year with three saves.

Pelicans $10,000 Charity Donation Contest

At each Pelicans home game, fans have the opportunity to vote for their favorite charity. At the end of the season, the organization with the most votes will be awarded a $10,000 check from Pelicans owners Quint and Rishy Studer. In addition to the charity winning, one lucky fan who completely fills out the Fan Survey Card will win $1,000! The announcement and drawing will take place on Sunday, August 30.

Pelicans Training Academy Info

The Pelicans Training Academy is holding a pitching and catching camp on August 3 and 4. Leading the camp are Major Leaguer Tim Spooneybarger and UWF Assistant Baseball Coach Shane Gierke. "Tim Spooneybarger is an experienced pitcher having played at the highest level and is a great instructor," says Bubba Griffith director of the Pelicans Training Academy, "The camp is the perfect time for kids as summer seasons wind down. Kids could use this camp to learn techniques to work on during the off season." The camp is aimed at refining the skill-sets necessary to excel as a pitcher and catcher. Morning sessions will practice fundamentals separately before combining at the end of the day. Spooneybarger, a 1998 graduate of Pine Forest High School, played two years in the Major Leagues with the Atlanta Braves. He also contributed to the 2004 Florida Marlins that won the World Series. Overall he appeared in 88 games in the majors and compiled a 3.24 ERA. Shane Gierke has been an assistant coach at the University of West Florida. For the past four years Gierke has served as the recruiting coordinator for the Argos and oversees catcher development and hitting instruction. In his second year as the Assistant Head Coach, Gierke helped lead the Argos to a record setting season, by setting the school record with 43 wins, winning the schools first GSC title in Baseball, and earning a trip to the NCAA tournament for the first time.

The cost of the the Camp is $110 and will last from 5:30 to 7:30 both nights and take place at the Pelicans Training Academy at 4920 N Davis Highway. Each participant will receive a T Shirt. To sign up, call the Pelicans Training Academy at 332-6274.

The Academy is also putting together a Fall team. Interested 9 and 10 year olds can tryout on August 15. More information will be coming soon at www.pelicanstrainingacademy.com.
