Birds fall again in Sioux City, 7-1

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-7) never got the offense going in a 7-1 loss to the Sioux City Explorers (6-6) on Saturday night at Lewis & Clark Park.

Sioux City took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Derek Schermerhorn reached on an infield single and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Jones. Jason Tuttle followed with an RBI single to score Schermerhorn and give the Explorers a 1-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the fourth inning. Beau Torbert reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before scoring on a single by Ben Van Iderstine. After three and a half innings, the game was tied, 1-1.

The Explorers took the lead in the sixth inning. Alex Llanos and Chris Grossman drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on base for Juan Camacho. Camacho followed with his fourth home run of the season, and the three-run blast put Sioux City up 4-1.

Sioux City pulled away in the seventh inning. Derek Schermerhorn doubled and Dustin Jones singled to put runners on the corners. Jason Tuttle drove in his second run of the game with a bunt single to the right side. An error by Josh Patton allowed the bases to be loaded, and Chris Grossman finished the scoring with a two-run single for the 7-1 final.

Alexander Francisco (7-1) picked up the win for Sioux City in his first start since coming off the disabled list. Ben Moore (6-5) took the loss for the Canaries.

The Canaries return to Sioux Falls on Sunday for a 2:05 p.m. game against the Sioux City Explorers. Sunday will be "The Day of Death-Defying Acts" presented by Royal River Casino and JobDig, featuring Chainsaw Juggler Mad Chad Taylor.
