Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Lakewood, NJ- Mike Durant's two-out, two RBI double in the bottom of the eighth turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead for the BlueClaws as Lakewood took down Delmarva on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park. With West Virginia's win over Lexington, the Shorebirds are officially eliminated from postseason playoff contention, however Delmarva can still challenge for the best overall record in the 2008 season, as they trail Lakewood by three games with seven remaining on the full season slate.

The pitchers duel between Luis Noel and Julian Sampson left the game tied 1-1 through seven innings, but both offenses came to life in the eighth. In the top of the frame, Ryan Adams led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Tyler Henson walked to put runners on the corners, Joe Nowicki drilled a hard chopper to second baseman Derrick Mitchell. Playing on the infield grass, Mitchell muffed the grounder and two runs came around to score, putting the Birds on top 3-1.

An inning later, the BlueClaws used a two-out rally to re-take the lead. With Freddy Galvis at second and Travis D'Arnoud at first, Tim Kennelly's single scored one and the ensuing Durant double brought home a pair. Aubrey Miller was tagged with the loss for Delmarva, his fifth of the season, while Moises Melendez earned the win with two innings out of the BlueClaw bullpen.

Shortstop Pedro Florimon was the only Shorebird to register a multi-hit game, while Durant held the same distinction for the BlueClaws in a contest controlled mostly by the pitchers. With six days and seven games remaining in the season, the Shorebirds remain in Lakewood for their final road matchup of the season on Wednesday night before returning home for the final six games on Thursday night against Lake County.
