Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - On the strength of a six-run second inning, the Delmarva Shorebirds coasted to a 13-3 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The win locked up a series victory for the Shorebirds (13-5) who took four of six from the Mudcats (10-8).
It took just one pitch in the Shorebirds half of the first for the home team to jump out in front. Hudson Haskin ambushed the pitch to hit a homer out to left, his second of the year, to put the Shorebirds ahead 1-0.
In the second, Dylan Harris, Jordan Cannon, and Trevor Kehe all worked walks to load the bases with one away. After a strikeout, Haskin coaxed a walk to force in a run. On the first pitch after Haskin's walk, Anthony Servideo laced a three-run double down the right field line to put the Shorebirds up 5-0. Jordan Westburg followed by ripping a two-run homer to left, his third of the year, capping the inning off with Delmarva up 7-0.
Carolina got one back in the top of the fourth on a Joe Gray Jr. RBI single, but Delmarva answered right back with a Jordan Cannon solo bomb, his fifth of the year, to restore Delmarva's seven run lead at 8-1.
The Shorebirds tacked on two more in the fourth as Servideo scored on a passed ball and Cristopher Cespedes brought home another run with a double to make it 10-2.
Hudson Haskin continued his sterling day by bashing a two-run double in the fifth, extending Delmarva's edge to 12-2.
In the seventh, Westburg stretched the Delmarva lead to 11 by swatting an RBI single to right, making it 13-2.
Carolina got one back in the top of the ninth on a Felix Valerio RBI knock but fell short as the Shorebirds locked up the 13-3 victory.
Kyle Martin (1-0) earned the win for Delmarva. Martin came on with runners at first and second and one out in the fourth and induced a double play out of the only batter he faced.
Caden Lemons (0-3) suffered the loss for Carolina. Lemons started and allowed seven runs in 1.1 innings, giving up three hits and five walks while striking out one.
Ryan Conroy earned his second save of the year for the Shorebirds, firing the final three innings while allowing just one run on two hits and a walk, racking up six strikeouts.
Haskin led the charge for the Delmarva offense, finishing a triple shy of the cycle while racking up four RBI. Servideo went 3-for-4 with a double and three driven in while Westburg had his eighth consecutive game with at least two hits, going 2-for-4 with a homer and three driven in.
Six different Mudcats collected hits, but Gray Jr. was the only one to collect multiple, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
After an off day on Monday, the Shorebirds return to action on Tuesday against the Lynchburg Hillcats at Perdue Stadium. Starters for both teams have not yet been announced. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and MiLB.TV beginning at 6:50 with Sam Jellinek on the call.
