Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
LINCOLN, NE- The Gary South Shore RailCats were looking like they were in control on Friday the 13th until a night mare seventh inning sent the RailCats to their fourth straight loss 7-4 to the Lincoln Saltdogs.
The RailCats in fact took the lead in the fourth off of Justin Kuks the Lincoln starter and built some solid momentum. Drew Martinez singled to start the inning and was followed by Josh Romanski who also singled. Craig Maddox then drove a ball to deep center for a two run scoring double to make it 2-0. The RailCats then added runs in each of the next two innings getting an RBI single in the fifth from Drew Martinez and another in the sixth from Zac Mitchell and the RailCats lead 4-0 into the stretch inning.
Morgan Coombs followed each RailCats run scoring inning with a shutdown inning. In two he pitched three up and three down frames for Gary. Coombs was working on a shut out through six.but then came the seventh when the Saltdogs broke through. Lincoln would send 10 men to the plate in a six run inning. Brent Joy Joynt started it with a lead off double off of Coombs. Kevin Howard reached on an error at third by Danny Pulfer. Matt Forgatch then singled to load the bases. The next batter Mike Gilmartin then drove in two to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Saltdogs with runners at first and second loaded the bases when Tony Viger was hit by a Coombs pitch. Eddie Young then drove the third run in to make it 4-3 with a single. Kevin Brahney was brought into the game to face Tyler Smith replacing Coombs. Brahney struck out Tyler Smith for out number one but a passed ball on catcher Craig Maddox allowed the tying run to score during the at bat of Chad Mozingo. With the game even at four Mozingo gave the Saltdogs the lead with an RBI single scoring two runs.
Lincoln added another run in the eighth and their bullpen kept the RailCats from making a comeback late behind the work of Michael Clink (2-1) who picked up the win going two innings. Marshall Schuler worked a scoreless ninth for the save his seventh. Morgan Coombs (3-2) was charged with the loss for the RailCats.
The two teams will play game two of the three game series Saturday with RHP Zachary Varce (1-1, 4.35) going for Lincoln while the RailCats will send out American Association pitcher of the week Dustin Crenshaw (2-1, 1.70).
