Great Lakes Loons News Release

PEORIA, IL - The Great Lakes Loons struck for five runs in the top half of the first inning and never looked back, defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the first of a four-game series with the Peoria Chiefs, 10-2. Paul Coleman picked up the win, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings. The win is the second in a row for the Loons.

The Loons' offensive outburst in the first frame was highlighted by homers by Eduardo Perez and Josh Bell. Perez's shot was a three-run homer to deep right field. Bell's blast was to straight-away center and came on the very next pitch. Francisco Lizarraga continued the inning with a run-producing single to left.

A Juan Rivera double in the fourth inning gave the Loons a 6-0 lead. Adolfo Gonzalez followed in the fifth inning with a two-run triple to make the score 8-0. Trayvon Robinson added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 9-0. Bell followed with an RBI single for the Loons in the sixth inning.

Coleman improves to 2-2 with the victory. Robert Hernandez (4-8) was roughed up in five innings, surrendering 16 hits and 10 runs (eight earned).

The Loons won back-to-back games for the first time since July 9 and 13, wins bookending a three-day layoff. It was the Loons' first consecutive days with wins since July 1-2.

Every member of the Loons lineup recorded a hit except Carlos Santana, who snapped an 11-game hitting streak. Santana did walk twice and score twice. Matt Berezay had four hits, two for doubles. Perez and Bell had three hits each.

The Chiefs, still in position for a second-half Midwest League West playoff berth, have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight.

The Loons go for three in a row Wednesday evening from O'Brien Field, beginning at 8pm ET. Loons right-hander Steven Johnson is scheduled to start. The game will be carried in Mid Michigan on the flagship home of Loons' Baseball, 100.9 WYLZ.
