Swing Stay Hot, Slay Dragons
August 7, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Lighting and heavy rain brought Tuesday night's game to a premature end in the middle of the eighth inning at John O'Donnell Stadium, but the Swing of the Quad Cities won for the fourth time in their last five games with a 5-3 final over the Dayton Dragons.
Quad Cities (26-17, 64-48) got a strong pitching performance from Elvis Hernandez and a 3-for-3 night at the plate from Christian Reyes to move into sole possession of first place in the Midwest League's Western Division. Dayton (23-21, 67-47) had just finished batting in the top of the eighth when the game entered a delay due to lightning in the immediate area, and eventually a heavy rainfall caused the game to be completed early.
That gave Hernandez (6-7) the win after a solid start for the Swing. The 22-year-old right-hander retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He struck out seven over five innings in all, allowing two runs on three hits and issuing one walk.
The Swing stranded five men aboard through the first two innings on Tuesday night before finally braking through in the third. Steven Hill started the rally with a one-out double to right, and Reyes followed suit with a double of his own off the right-field wall that got Quad Cities on the board. Two batters later, Jared Schweitzer split the gap in left-center with another two-base hit to put the Swing ahead 2-0.
That score remained until the Dragons evened things up in the top of the fifth. Juan Francisco registered the first hit against Hernandez, slugging a one-out pitch over the fence in center to put Dayton on the scoreboard. Later in the frame Tony Esquer doubled to right and Zack Cozart drove him in with a flare-single to left, making it a 2-2 game.
But Quad Cities quickly recaptured control in the bottom of the frame, when singles by Reyes and Nick Derba and a walk to Schweitzer loaded the bases with nobody out. Oliver Marmol followed with a sacrifice fly to center, putting the Swing back in front, 3-2.
That cushion grew in the sixth, as Antone DeJesus reached base on an error to open the frame and Daryl Jones singled him to third. Tony Cruz followed with a run-scoring blooper to center, and Reyes added a groundball single later in the inning to score Jones for a 5-2 edge.
Dayton tacked on a run in the top of the eighth against reliever Kyle Mura (3), who was awarded the save as the game reached its completion.
The loss went to Misael DeJesus (6-3), who allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits over three frames out of the bullpen.
