Florence Y'alls News Release
The Freedom allowed five runs in the eighth inning as they fell 7-2 to Gateway on Saturday night in Sauget, Ill. Florence drops to a game below .500 at 24-25.
Kent Gerst hit a leadoff homer off of Freedom starter Andy Clark to give Gateway a 1-0 lead in the first. Nick Farnsworth led off the fifth with a solo shot to make it a 2-0 edge. Clark has allowed 12 home runs this season, the most in the Frontier League.
The Freedom were held scoreless by Grizzlies starter Corey Davisson until the sixth. Chris Curley doubled with two outs on a fly ball that was misplayed by the Grizzlies outfielders. Drew Rundle brought him home with an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.
Clark (6-2) held the Grizzlies to two runs on three hits but was hung with the loss. He has limited the opposition to just six earned runs in 26 innings over his last four starts for an ERA of 2.08 over that span.
Davisson (2-2) limited the Freedom to a run on six hits in seven innings for the victory.
Gateway put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The runs scored on two fielder's choices, a two-run double by Charlie Lisk and a wild pitch to make it 7-1.
The Freedom plated a run in the ninth on Justin Holloway's RBI single.
The series rubber match will be on Sunday at 4:05 ET. Alec Lewis (1-1, 2.49) will make his first start for the Freedom, who are 5-2 in rubber games this season.
